Oil Changes Out of Dealer? Keeping Records and How much?

    I've never been an organized person.

    What should I, or what do I NEED to do in order to keep my warrenty on the Prius.

    I don't want to spend 50 bucks a pop at the dealership on service of the car - Jiffy Lube does it

    for 16 bucks or so.


    What records do I need to keep? What services do I need to do - and when, if ever, do I need to goto the dealership for service.


    Also - how much oil goes into the 2007 Prius Touring - is it different than the 2007 Basic Model?

    Can I order my own oil filters and bring my own oil? Or is that tacky - and like bringing your own blue cheese to hooters - or your own salad dressing to a sushi bar.

    Yes - I've RTFM - and apparently I suck at it. (or maybe didn't try to hard)

    If I were you, I'd do it myself rather then have Jiffy Lube/Dealers use their crappy oil (they might even overfill it!).

    I believe stapling the receipts of all the oil changes done or the receipts of the parts that you bought to change oil to the maintenance manual should suffice.

    As far as I know, the 2007 Touring and the Basic Model uses the same engine, so the oil should be the same.
    According to john1701a, you need about 3.3 quarts (you can always add more if the dipstick shows that its too low).

    I'm in California and I found this neat website for the California Department of Insurance. They had these recommendations for how to keep your warranty intact (scroll down to "Routine Maintenance Required"):

    It suggests keeping receipts for all the parts and tools you buy and recording the maintenance (logging, date, mileage and type of service) that you performed.

    The dealer gave me a little service tracking booklet to record all the recommended services to my prius. The dealer/mechanic is supposed to fill it out and stamp it with a Toyota certified stamp when they perform the service. I was thinking about doing my own oil changes and tire rotations, then stamp it with my own stamp that says "Certified Cheapskate".
