I'm not sure, but I think the ad on the top is fed via an advertisement feed. I don't know if Danny actually has any control over that. I mean, if there were a huge uproar then perhaps he could yank that revenue stream and ask for donations.

I like the idea of non-english ads.

Not only does it help me feel less provincial, they are easier to ignore ;)

    Tempest in a teapot, IMO.

Hmmm, "offended"? Really? Those ads are by Google...whomever chooses to pay Google to post their ads at web sites like PC can get them posted. The only ones it costs are the company paying for the ad. If you're really bothered the best thing you can do is click the ad so that it costs the company money, then don't buy anything. The Google and PC get paid, the company you're upset at loses money and you're out nothing but the energy it took to click once.

Are you offended when you see a sign advertising in spanish everywhere? You know that almost every other country in the world has English language signs at many many places. We live in a diverse society with people of many languages and backgrounds. While I certainly do not want public money spent to provide for non-English speakers simply for their convenience we should pay for multi-lingual signage for places where international travelers frequent and, in particular, when issues of public safety and health are of concern.

OTOH, it's just plain good business for private businesses to provide multilingual signage...if you want the business then you need to provide for all your customers. Thus, the commercially sponsored ad.

Exposure to other languages has not been shown to be hazardous to your health. On the contrary, knowing more than one language could be considered an asset and a sign of intelligence. We should strive to be liguistically more like the Ducth who know several languages and speak english better than we do. They actually can be irritated by our use of english.

Por ejemplo si supieses español entenderias esta oracion. Ok?

You know, Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the US. All puertoricans are american citizens and their first language is spanish. Ergo not all americans have english as their first language.

The ads might be "geo targeted" based on the IP address of your ISP, so if you see a lot of ads in Spanish that could be the cause.

The Internet is international in nature, and many, many English-as-a-second-language folks surf onto English sites. My little boat building site has regular visitors from the European Union, Sweden, the Netherlands, China, Finland, Brazil, Malaysia, South Korea, Latvia, Spain, the Russian Federation, Poland, Romania, Italy, the Ukraine, Hungary, Argentina and Norway in addition to the English speaking countries. Many of these visitors see the Google ads in Spanish or French (not sure about the others, but I think Google has foreign language versions for all of them).

We still have freedom, so individual businesses can do what they want in regards to communicating or advertising in whatever language suits them. If you want to get upset, call your county Registrar of Voters office and ask how many languages the ballots are produced in (the 1965 Civil Rights Act requires ballots in foreign languages).

This is the funniest post I've seen on priuschat.

I don't know which is more ridiculous-- the idea that you feel like you got screwed out of seeing a web ad, or your feeling that intarweb should be solely in the language you happen to speak and somehow belongs to whatever you think "here" refers to.

Kudos to those capable of responding more diplomatically :)

There are ads on the top of the page on PriusChat? I never see any. My ZoneAlarm Pro firewall ad blocking feature must get rid of them.

Every international airport I have passed through outside of the USA had signs in at least four languages. Are you suggesting that we not admit tourists who do not read English?

I am offended by people who are so dim and idiotic to say something like this! People like this haven't ever traveled to a foreign country, probably haven't bothered to learn a foreign language, etc etc etc.

It's just sad to see people who are so narrow minded about the rest of the world that they see one ad in another language and get all bent out of shape.

And here they are on a forum centered around a foreign car.

Dude, go away and buy a Ford Truck or something if you're offended by an ad in Spanish. You have no more hope than that in your life.

    Sheesh!

I've spent some time travelling around the Netherlands (my mother-in-law is from there, and my wife and I visited a number of her relatives). I was disappointed that I didn't get a chance to learn any Dutch (not that I was likely to- must be the hardest language on earth to speak) because everyone spoke English perfectly and there was no compelling reason to learn any Dutch phrases.
My mother-in-law speaks seven languages and is representative of many Europeans. Not only do people in the Netherlands often speak English better than many Americans, they also know more about American politics and current events than most Americans.

Just to clarify, I'm not offended, but I do believe it shouldn't be this way. but what's even better is when you go to the hospital and the nurses have to know spanish because half of their patients don't know english. Those who don't live in Mexican border states won't understand. When somebody can't get a job in the US because they don't know Spanish, something is a little off.... (exaggerated, but close). and the whole European example just doesn't work here. Maybe if each different state spoke a different language and was a different country (since the netherlands are roughly twice the size of new jersey), it would be more applicable.

I have a Chinese friend who's parents came here illegally. They made it a point to learn English to simply be less noticeable and did all they could to "Americanize" themselves, so much that my friend doesn't even have an accent. Eventually they got their citizenship. I think they had more respect for the US, where as today's illegal immigrants would rather wave the flag of Mexico all over Los Angeles instead of the US flag, rubbing it in our faces that they're Mexican and demanding that we allow them the same privileges as US citizens.

ps: I found Squid's AV to be pretty funny. Then again, nothing really offends me. What's the point? Nobody can never offend anybody else.

    First -

The correct syntax would be, "So, Which Native American tribe are your ancestors from?"

    Second -

    Cherokee

    Third -

Learn to speak the language, or stfu and get out.
