One day my JBL system wouldn't turn on. Took it to the local Toyota dealer, who has had it now
for two days. His Prius specialist says that the problem is between the components. he says he's
got it working twice but then it conks out again. They're keeping it over the weekend and will
contact Toyota on Monday. Anyone else have this problem?

radio won't turn on? fuses ok? then you replace it. DH has never seen a dead radio that was not fixed by replacing a blown fuse or replacing the head unit. if he got it working again it might be a loose connection.

Any add-ons, e.g., DICE iPod unit, XM Radio, etc.? Maybe one of those third-party components is messing things up.

That's one of the confusing items. The whole radio setup is as delivered to me. I haven't added anything.
I did get 9 months free of sirius, but never got to use it because the radio stopped playing.
I assume I just got the standard JBL package since I didn't pay anything extra, nor did I ask for anything
extra, no DICE, no iPod, no nothing.

Doesn't the JBL package come with satelite radio capability?
I assume that it does because that option comes up on the screen when you turn it on.

Not from the factory. It's coming up since you have a Sirius tuner added on - so to answer Bill's question, yes you do have a 3rd party add-on.

Not quite. After six days in the shop, the dealer has just informed me that with the help of
Toyota engineers they have found and corrected the problem.
It was, as Bill Merchant suspected, caused by a defective satellite tuner. However the tuner
was not a third party add-on, it was installed in the car as delivered to me by the dealer.
He asked if I wanted 9 months of free sirius and then went into his office and activated it,
by phone I guess. Apparently It was included with the JBL unit; I didn't pay anything extra for it.

The dealer removed the defective tuner and the unit resumed playing. He's ordered a
replacement and will install it when it arrives. Incidentally, this dealer was not the one from whom
I bought the car. Case closed.

3rd party is anything that's installed that's not directly from Toyota. So if a Toyota dealer installed it, it's still a 3rd party add-on. Toyota does not include accessories from the factory, like some manufactures do. For instance, Ford adds Sirius to every car and GM adds XM to every car but that's because they own a large chunk of them respectively.
