Curious - I'm getting a new Prius next week - I'm a cyclist and wanted to put a hitch receiver and bike rack on. Have read many posts regarding - not seeing much about effecting fuel economy. Anyone notice much change in fuel economy with the hitch receiver, but no bike rack? I understand once I load bikes on the rack it might go down.

I have not noticed any loss in MPG since having the hitch installed I average 53 mpg combined city /hwy driving, I do think it stiffened the rear end so I dont feel the sway I think it might have had. Maybe wishful thinking on my part. :)

Oh and go with the Curt hitch the Coastal seems to be weak, chk other threads on that

I've had the Coastal hitch now for over two years (roughly) and have no complaints. It just plain works. I have a couple of different bike racks I put on it...depending on whether we're going with 3 or 4 singles...or our tandem.

Thanks - that's what I wanted to hear. I will have one or two road/tri bikes on the rack -

I've had Coastal hitch for about one year and carry two bikes with no apparent loss in MPG. I get between 49 - 50 MPG wit bikes on the back.

I've had the same Coastal (2") hitch on my 2004, 05 and now the 06 Prius with no noticeable loss of MPG. That is, until I put on the 4-bike rack and our 2 bikes...then the MsPG drop like a stone.

I've had the Curt hitch (which is superior to the coastal hitch in design and price) and have seen no drop in mielage. In fact, when my bike rack is installed (without the bike) I actually see a slight increase in mileage.
