Hi everyone - this is my first post on this board. My husband and I have decided to get a Prius and I've been lurking here the last few days reading up - this is a great site!

Anyway, I'm looking for a Prius, touring pkg #5 or 6 in magnetic gray. I had one dealer tell me none were available w/in 500 miles of us and that we couldn't order one. We have another dealer who says there is one that he's looking into whether he can get it here or not.

My question is - if this exact car isn't available to us locally, can we order one from Toyota (via the dealer) to be built to our specs? I know this can be done with American made cars sometimes, but this is my first, non-Ford purchase. Any insights? Thanks in advance!!

I think you can order one. Or you can find a dealer where they carry the car and fly over there one day and drive back. That will be fun as well.

Tell the dealer to find you one with your specified color and options package.
If they won't do that, find another dealer.

I insisted on Barcelona Red -which the dealer didn't have in stock - the dealer kept asking me what other color I wanted until I started to get up to leave. Then all of a sudden he was like, sure, we'll order that for you....

Yes, you can order anything you want on the car from a dealer.

Normally, dealer tend to push buyer to buy something off their lot. If you do plan to buy a vehicle off the dealer lot, you can get more bargain power. If you still insisted to order your own vehicle, you probably don't have any bargain power, plus dealer can ask more $$ due to your special request.

You should try to build the vehicle with your spec at buyatoyota.com and bring your quote to the dealer. This will help the dealer to find the vehicle that fit your needs.

Welcome to the site. Read through www.carbuyingtips.com. When contacting the Internet Sales Managers it shouldn't matter if they have what you want on the lot, will have to trade for it, or will have to order it. Let everyone know you are shopping around. If you are willing to pay a fair price someone will be willing to find your car. OTOH, you can use that choice as a bargaining chip. I want x but will consider y color for $$ less. Happy hunting.

You CANNOT order a specific car to be built to your specs in the USA. (I believe it's different for Europe). Toyota builds the cars it thinks will sell, and ships them to the various regions of the U.S. Apparently, certain configurations are not shipped to certain regions. The Region then allocates cars to the various dealers, with high-sales dealers getting more cars, but at this point the dealer still does not have a choice of which cars he will be allocated.

HOWEVER, dealers get a list of what specific cars they have been allocated, and what configurations those cars have; and the dealers can then trade allocations among themselves.

WHAT THIS MEANS is that you can tell a dealer what you want, and that dealer can make an effort to find the car you want. The more dealers you go to, the better are your chances. Let's say Dealer A has the car you want, and you go to Dealer B. Maybe dealer B cannot get that car from Dealer A because Dealer B has no car Dealer A is willing to swap for. But maybe Dealer C does have a car Dealer A wants, so he can get your car for you. Multi-dealer swaps are also possible. And some dealers will not go to the bother.

THE UPSHOT IS that although you cannot order your specific car from Toyota, you CAN get the car you want if you shop around enough. In extreme cases, you may have to look farther afield. People have flown to distant cities to buy their car, and then driven it home. It's all a matter of how badly you want a specific car, and how many of that configuration are available.

Be persistent. Visit several dealers. Read all the car-buying tips. And good luck.

It is different here in Europe. I'm waiting for delivery for my Red Mica Metallic Business edition Prius with front and rear parking assist. My dealer told me it will be delivered in august.
