good places to rent a pickup truck?

    we're going to be renting a truck soon to haul a car across a couple states. it needs to be hauled back because the engine is toast, and it's the perfect match for our frankenstein-esque way of restoring our totalled camry.

    anyone know where is a good place to rent a pickup truck for a couple days at a reasonable rate? with all the talk of "you can rent a truck if you need one" in the anti-suv threads :)lol:) i figure someone somewhere on this forum has done it. right? :)

    Most U-Haul places will allow you to rent one for about $20.00 before taxes and fees - in-town. Rental fees for inter-state travel will be a bit higher. Of course, you could poll the audience and see if anyone from WI also has a truck in addition to their Prius. I'd offer to help but I'm all the way over in CT.

    Never tried to rent an open pickup truck, but I have rented cargo vans and medium sized moving trucks. In addition to U-Haul, Budget and Ryder have large country wide organizations. Particularly with larger trucks, you may find it cheaper to rent one way than to pay for the gas for a round trip! Shop around on the Internet for what's available in your area. If you decide to do a round trip, call around locally (let your fingers do the walking, as Ma Bell would say...). You typically get better deals from independents, but you don't get the convenience of only having to drive the big honker one way. Just don't try to take a local rental interstate unless the contract says you can...you can probably BS the counter guy, but not the GPS tracking box (which also records your speed, so if the contract includes maximums, best to stay within them. One more thing to shop around for.)

    Probably not appropriate to your situation, but I recently borrowed from friends, and returned the truck with a full fuel tank.

    we gave up on the pickup truck and found an SUV with the necessary towing capacity- a trailblazer. finding a pickup was proving to be much harder than we expected, while SUVs were readily available and therefore cheaper. we have a friend who would lend us his truck if his and DH's schedules ever matched up. that would be sometime in july, and we need to pick up the car asap.

    so we have the trailblazer reserved for two days of use at national car rental for $110, unlimited miles. seems to be a decent deal compared to what we were seeing for pickups and other SUVs. we will post more about our experiences with them after the trip (first weekend of june)

    just in case anyone else is looking for the information, that's what we ended up doing.

    :huh: :huh: How do you tow a car using a rental SUV. The rental SUV mostly do not have any towing hitch.

    BTW, I love national rental car. With emerald status, you can just walk to the car without visiting the rental counter. They have rolls of cars to choose from. Just choose your favorite car, hoop in and drive out the gate. :)

    yeah we called a few days ago and asked about towing hitches, and they cancelled our reservation :(

    so we're waiting to hear back from the local ford dealer on whether or not we can get an F-150.

    the ford dealer has been really nice- i called them again and reached the rental manager. they have an F-150 reserved for us with a trailer hitch, and are looking for an insert for us to use. they gave us 1000 miles with the rental for $49.99 a day.

    the reason we went with them is because the toyota rental program at the dealer here only rents cars. ;)

    now i gotta set up a reservation for a trailer!
