Hi everybody/ Do any of you know how to unlock the car without removing the smart key from your pocket? I know you can lock the car this way by touching the black button on the outside of the doorbut how do you unlock it without taking the key out of your pocket? Does anybody know? Thanks.

Just hold the door handle briefly on the driver's door, the front passenger door or the hatch.

also make sure it is turned on, the switch is located in the car below the steering wheel, if it is turned on already the battery in your fob may need replaced.

Package #1 , I do not think is the SMART key system ? Does the car sticker mention option SMART KEY ? If not then you stuck using key fob and when starting car need to put fob in slot in the dash.
Even SMART KEY equiped cars have the dash slot to put key fob in also but you do not need to .

Mine has SMART KEY and you can even program it ( in manual ) so that when the driver handle is grabbed ALL the doors can unlock which I like easier when I want to put something in rear seat . Or you hit the key fob twice to unlock all doors , or else open driver door and hit button on door to unlock all doors .
    my 2 cents

    Mary....

If you go up to the driver door, or rear door for saftey reasons only those doors will unlock. If you go up to the passenger door, all doors will unlock.

the black button only locks the car so you dont have to take the key out, you can press it and leave. I thouhgt the way u did and would go to the driver door and it would unlock then i would hit the button but it would just lock again.

there is a way to change the way it works so when u go to the driver door it will open all, if you look thru the manual, or the little blue book that was on the steering wheel when u got the car.

Its something like turning off the car, stand on one foot, and pet ur tummy and pat ur head, but im not quiet certain

Actually, the SKS works differently on the hatch than on the front doors.

The hatch latch requires pressure to unlatch and an additional pressure pulse to open. To open the hatch, press the latch-release twice. To just unlock the car press the hatch-release once; this is convenient if you have a passenger approaching the door and you are walking behind the car since the car will unlock without opening the hatch.

As previously stated, the front doors are unlocked by merely inserting you hand between the body and the handle. This allows the locked door to be opened in one smooth motion if not done too rapidly.

Tom, how do you program it so that when you grab the driver's door, all the doors open. Thanks.

It's in the owner's manual, around page 30-ish. If you can't or don't want to do it yourself, perhaps your dealership can do it for you at your next oil change.

    IT's not hard , page 32
    with the car off
push the lock button with the panic button ( do the lock first so you don't have the panic
alarm going off ) then holding panic button hit the lock a second time , now you should be
in all doors unlocking mode .
If you hit lock a 3rd time you in single door unlock mode .

so repeating first beep is driver door unlock
2nd beep all doors unlock mode
3rd beep single door unlock mode

BTW I have fooled myself just opening the hatch to put bags in trunk then "forgetting"
to lock it again, even doors were open , when I went back into shopping mall .
Sometimes i wish there were a auto locking mode but there is none .
just remember to lock it again .

My Prius is obviously "dumb" since it doesn't have the button under the steering wheel. I guess I just have to use the fob.

If your fob has a silver Toyota emblem you have SKS. If it is a black emblem you do not have SKS. SKS must have been part of a higher option package in 2005. If it isn't standard now, it probably will be soon.

JimN, I used to be able to lock my doors by pushing the black button on the outside of the door. Today with fob in my pocket, I tried to lock the car by pushing the black button and it did not lock. What do you suppose this means?

    Mary,

Check the Smart key cancel button under the dash and make sure it is the out position, also make sure all the doors are securely closed and that if you have a key inside the car, you also have one outside near the door so the ECU can "see" it.

    Thanks Bear,

I'm going to check for the out position now. I hope I can find it.

Either a door or hatch was not completely closed, the car was still "on", or your smartkey power button under the steering wheel got pushed off.

    Hope this helps.

Have you read anything in the owner's manual?

or the fob battery is dead.

BTW, all 2005's above package 1 include the SKS.

I remember the first day I got the Prius. The one I rented didn't have SKS, so I wasn't sure how it worked exactly. I thought you unlocked by grabbing the handle while pressing the black button at the same time. Then I decided to read the manual. Very embarrassing when showing to friends. :p
