BEWARE! Has this happened to anyone else? I left a coin or 2 in my front cup holder. When I closed the cup holder, a coin apparently fell into the gap. So, now I can no longer flip the cup holder open. Anybody know how to fix this? (without tearing up my console)
    Thanks!

The front cupholders are part of a subassembly that snaps off pretty easily. Take a look at the attached page from the repair manual to see how it's held in place. Once you get it off you should be able to hold it upside down to get the coins out, or if that doesn't work then do a little more disassembly to get at it.

    Good Luck.

I spilled a little milk down there a few weeks back on a hot day. Smelled nasty when I got back, so I had to figure out how to remove the cup holder assembly. It's a breeze! Pulled it apart, rinsed it thoroughly, dried it and reassembled. No trouble at all!

That's pretty funny about the coins. I've actually wondered a few times whether leaving coins in there would get them stuck. I thought it might be ok, but I decided not to test my luck. Now I might just have to disassemble that console just to see how easy it is :)

When I first got my Prius, I put the coins in the front holder and immediately tried to close it. Coins started sliding down. From that point on, I put them in the second holder. But it's nice to know you can disassemble the front cup.

I've had to open mine up as well. Not hard. If I'm alone I don't put soda cans in the front holder since any drip is sticky and it is a lot easier to clean the rear holder. :)

The Prius cup holder design is not very good. Toyota should have used the 2001 RAV4 design.

Men are very crafty and I know I'm late to the party here, but my solution is a bit elegant. I lifted the cup holder cover about a quarter way up and then used my tweezers to capture the coins. I do like learning how to assemble and disassemble, but I'm sleeping in Walmart's parking lot, 1st day of homelessness. Hope this helps someone.
