Based on evan's and Jimbok's great tank; I thougth I would kick it up a notch. So far, so good. I am on my way. I still have 6 pips left. Here is how I am doing do so far:

I'll post the final picture in the "I beat the EPA thread" after I break 1000 miles.

Seriously, you are doing an excellent job! I can't wait to see how this tank turns out. Good Luck! :)

Not to be the bearer of bad news or anything, but even if you managed to get a full 11.9 gallons in (i.e., no bladder) that would put you at 985 miles based on your current mileage. Extremely impressive to be getting that kind of mileage, but I think a 1000 mile tank is a pipe dream. I do hope you ultimately manage to prove me wrong though. I just had my first 500 mile tank (at 56 mpg) so I'm obviously jellous in any event.

How on Earth do you do that!? Can you tell a little of your driving route and trip times? I note there is no regen so you must be strictly P&G on flats? It's not so easy around where I am because of all the stopping required and impatient drivers. However I am proud to report I'm well on my way to my first 600+ mile tank (only my 3rd tank)! I got 53.9, 58.5, and now averaging 61.8mpg on this tank... I am getting the hang of it! Just wish I had the opportunity to score some 800+ tanks :(...

Hence the drama. Will I make it? Will the weather get cooler? Will it be windy? Will traffic impede my progress? Will I have to make short trips. We shall see next week. I just put down 103.3 mpg over 62.4 miles today from work with no block heater after I ran a bunch of quick errands. 20 miles of this was with little to no traffic in my practice area. If you drive slow enough and anticipate traffic, many things are possible with this car.

Find a route where you drive between 25 and 35 mph, use a block heater, pump your tires up, anticipate traffic, and try to never let your car come to a complete stop. It takes me 45 minutes to get to work over between 16.8 - 18.6 miles depending on where I need to go for work. Good observation on the no regens. I pulse and glide and try to glide to a stop without using regen or the brakes. The routes I take allow me to not be an obstruction to other traffic. Congratulation on your 600 mile tank. If you can some of the above 700 miles will be pretty easy; then 800, then 900, and then 1000.

Could you tell us what is the most gas you ever been able to pump in. That should give us a better idea of how feasible this endeavor is. For example, at 11 gallons even you'd obviously have to average 90.9 mpg to get 1000 miles. That means 97.8 mpg for the remaining theoretical 540 miles.

And I really do wish you good luck, even if I am tempted to press the reset button on your consumption screen though my monitor. :D

I don't know how, but I pumped in 12.138 gallons on 2/9/2007, with an ambient temperature of 32F. I have filled up 15 times in 9100 miles and that was the first time I used a different pump. Since that fill-up, I have used the same pump. I seem to pump between 11.4 - 11.8 gallons each time. I know there is still work to do, but i expect my average mpg to be in the mid to upper 80's by the time this is all said and done.

I thought I was off to a good start with my tank. 70.1 at 391 miles. I'm not even in your league. I see there is still a long way to go and a lot to learn. Like to know how you do that.

    Jim,

You know I could only take it so long when you popped a 72.x mpg tank. I may have to really be obnoxious and try to end up with a 90.x mpg tank. Thanks for the inspiration Jim. :p

Wow, that alone is impressive. I've yet to get more than 9.5 gallons in. But of course my bladder is still new and not all stretched out yet. I also haven't tried pushing it beyond about 10 miles after the guess gauge starts to blink. How far have you gone with it blinking? Ever run out???

Awesome mileage. But even more than that, an incredible bladder. What have you been doing? Waiting for hot weather and pressurizing the tank?

Anyway, congratulations on your achievement so far.

    Highly ImPriused,

With regards to bladder, is it the luck of the draw. I don't do anything special. I have filled up when it is 32F and when it is 82F. I just pull up and pump.

I have run out of fuel. I went 820.3 miles on that tank. I pumped in 11.504 gallons. It was the next tank after I went 670.4 miles and then I pumped the 12.138 gallons. I think the most I went on a flashing pip was about 150 miles.

    dmckinstry,

Nothing special. I just pull up and pump.

I don't know how I inspired you. You were getting tanks like that in the winter! I will agree with the obnoxious part. :D

As if you need something to push your numbers even higher, have you considered an EV switch? If you haven't seen my comments on CleanMPG, I put one in Thursday evening. I delayed this mod as long as I did because I haven't seen many come out and say with certainty, "It saves me fuel." But after considering its potential application in my normal travels, I convinced myself it will save me fuel and frustration -- in particular, when the ICE refuses to shut off at speeds <34 MPH before full S4 operation. During my commute through town yesterday it was pretty cool to be able to shut off the ICE at will on city streets. FYI, I used Evan Fusco's home-grown approach described here.

    Thanks for your inspiration!

EDIT: I have posted more details of the EV switch installation here.

Good luck to you on the 1,000-mile tank and thank you for detailing your driving habits and circumstances. I was feeling somewhat inadequate until I realized that "little or no traffic" happens here in Houston about as frequently as snow. I drive a stretch where you are considered a parked car if you are not doing at least 70 mph!

I was curious about the lack of regen. In my driving, I tend to get quite a few little cars of regen and my battery regularly hits 6 or 7 bars. When I get on a 35 mph street, I pulse to about 40, glide down to about 36 and then try to drive in stealth mode as long as my SoC is 4 or more (I call that Pulse, Glide and Stealth, PG&S). Is plain P&G better than that? It seems to me that selecting between P&G and PG&S depending on the SoC should be better than always choosing P&G? Is this wrong? Am I making the engine spend too much energy recharging my battery?

On a completely different note, can all the posters here always prefix the word "bladder" with the phrase "gas tank?" On this topic alone, I've seen phrases like "my bladder is new, not all stretched out yet" and "an incredible bladder." For whatever reason, I've had to get up and pee three times in the few minutes I spent reading these posts! :D Of course, we readers know what the term means in context of this discussion, but I can just see a co-worker or family member looking over your shoulder (or when you are away from your computer) and getting quite a chuckle at your expense.

I never really used to use mine but after I learned that I could activate EV mode immediately after my morning start up and not allow the ICE to come on. I now try to use this technique at each start up since I only drive a mile or so before getting on the freeway (both home and school). I'm thinking that this could add up to at least a little savings.
