I was in a cat explosion once.

Friends of mine had two dogs and three cats, and one of the dogs was old and arthritic. Cookie had a hard time getting up the porch stairs, so my friends asked me if I'd get the cats upstairs so they could hold the door open for Cookie. All the cats were friendly and had spent lots of time in my lap and climbing on me, but I didn't realize that two of them could not abide each other. It was kind of like one of those binary chemical weapons. I was okay with either one in my arms, but when I picked up the second one, there was a loud and violent explosion and in an eyeblink I had scratches on my arms, my shirt was ripped, and two furry blurs were rocketing up the stairs like Buck Rogers' space ship on amphetamines.

Maybe some day I'll tell you about the time I was attacked and bitten by wild animals in Kenya. Obviously, I survived. But that story does not belong in this thread, as it does not involve cats.

    Aw, why not?

My cat attack story does not involve bodily harm to myself. A friend's dog (Lapsa Aphso) came into the house. Mia, the 7 lb cat, started stalking the dog, which confused me as I thought the cats would go hide in the cat tree. My roommate said "maybe she is protecting her territory", at which point Mia leapt on the dog's back. The dog jumped into it's owner's arms and Mia was kicked across the room by the owner (who did suffer a couple of scratches in the process). This upset Noel, who immediately puffed up, at which point, we gathered up the cats and locked them away upstairs. Thus, I can never own a dog.

Not necessarily. The Lhasa was probably putting out "small dog" attitude and Mia could not abide it. Attitude is a cat's job!

Because the wild animals were not cats. This is a cat thread.

Hm, maybe we should start a wild animal thread then. It sounds like an interesting story :) (but only because you survived. otherwise it would be a sad story).

Mia is most definitely a cat with attitude.

This thread needs to be revived. Cats have 9 lives so I guess this is the second :)

I changed my avatar. This is Noel, in one of his favorite positions, hanging over my wife's shoulder.

I tried to take a picture of Samantha today but she shot into the basement. I always thought of Noel as dark, but he is light compared to her jet black fur. He is actually a 'smoke'. The inside 2/3 of each hair is pure white, the outside end is black. He has some tabby in there somewhere as he has stripes.

We still can't let them roam the house at will. They are either on leashes so we can get them close without being too close, or one is shut in a room while the other has free range.

Here is a site with some lovley cats from Crete. Its in German but the pictures speak for themselves.

Basically the site is by someone who recuse stray cats, brings them beck to health and re-houses them in Germany.

There are some sad stories there, but most end well.

    Looking for cat advice:

I like cats but don't have one at the moment. Currently my 'pets' are the cottontails, squirrels, quail, juncos, finches, jays, sparrows, juniper titmice, doves, towhees, and the like that gather around my dining room bay window feeding on the seed I spread around each morning.

This morning the area was devoid of wildlife. There was though a very large yellow cat peeking in the window at me. It was a friendly looking fellow and apparently belongs to my new neighbors.

Do you folks have any suggestions on how I might politely discourage them from allowing their cat to roam free around our sparsely settled foothill area? I don't want to frighten them, but free range cats don't last long around here - this is coyote territory.

I have to admit that my concern is more for my 'pets' than for their cat. How can I in good concience keep feeding these critters when I know I'm just setting them up for potential disaster?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I find it hard to believe they don't know about the coyotes. Heck, last night these guys (the coyotes, not the neighbors) were howling quite profoundly in the vincinity of our homes. And no, coyotes don't just come out at night; they just do their howling at night.

    Thanks for listening.

    Ken

    Ken,
I would be surprised if they decided to keep the cat indoors because you said "please, it is scaring off the wildlife". Maybe telling them about the short lifespan of domestic cats IS the best solution. They may not have made the connection between the coyotes and peril to their cat if the just moved from a city.

Okay, cat-lovers. Perhaps you can help me out here. I returned home tonight from picking up my Prius in Nashville and discovered that Mia had managed to cut up one of her rear paws. I can't find any obvious source for her cut (back tracking the blood prints), so it's possible that it's from a fight with Noel (though this has never happened in the past). A couple of pads of the paw are slashed or lacerated (not puncture wounds, I don't think). The bleeding had stopped, but when I cleaned the one wound I saw (just with a damp cloth), it started bleeding again, after which I noticed that other pads of the paw were also cut. The wounds seem minor--and the bleeding has almost stopped again (had to lock her in the tiled bathroom to prevent tracking blood over the carpet)--should I try to clean it out again (and how) or take her to the vet? Or trust that it will heal on its own?

I would get some of the "stop-bleed" gel from your nearest pet store and apply it to the areas that are cut. It will probably heal fine on it's own, but it does take a while for it to heal, and the longer it's in that healing process, the greater chance of infection. Let us know how she's doing, and I hope this helps!

Well, the bleeding stopped pretty quickly on its own, so I just bought some antibacterial spray at the pet store to prevent infection. It doesn't seem to bother her, and she's not licking at it. She does limp indignatly after I inspect the paw, and then stops after a couple of strides (she greatly exagerrated this routine when I let her out of the bathroom). So I guess I'll keep my eye on it to see how it heals.

Hmmm, I think at about that time, I would have kicked the owner for kicking my pet.

Cats are very territorial and protect their territory aggresively. I have five cats...various ages from 18 years old down to 14 months old. My 6 year old seal point Himalayan is the most territorial of all of them. The 18 year old Persian is too old to care, and the 15 year old Maine Coon, well, she's happy as long as she's with "mommie", my wife. The two "babies", my blue point Himalayans, are brother and sister from different litters, but 4 months apart in age. They're too interested in playing than being territorial right now. The only problem we have with so many cats, is where to find a place to sleep on the bed. We have a king sized bed and somehow, the five of them manage to occupy the bed. I will attempt to post some pics of my babies later.
