Treo 700p: won't link to Prius when phone is off?

I've read a lot of the other "Prius with Treo" threads, but I haven't seen this problem (?) yet. My 2007 Prius won't link with my Treo 700p when the phone is off. By "off", I mean that I have pressed the red button once briefly to turn off the screen. The phone DOES ring and I can answer it when in this state.

So whenever I turn on the car, the bluetooth doesn't connect to the phone. However, if I turn on the phone screen, it then connects with no problem.

With my old Motorola phone, I didn't need to do anything to the phone when I started the car to have the car connect to it.

Do I actually need to turn on the Treo when I get in to the car to get it to connect? Is there something else I haven't done?

    Thanks,
    J.

Yes. You tapping the power button puts in power save mode. Naturally the bluetooth turns off as well.

Really? I never had to "turn on" my Motorola phone to get it to link with the Prius. Is there something I can do so that they just "automatically" connect when I turn on the car?

    Thanks,
    J.

It sounds like your phone is deactivitating its bluetooth when the screen is off (likely to save battery). When the phone rings and/or the screen comes on, it is apparently then coming out of this standby mode and turning bluetooth back on, but unfortunately the Prius doe not seem to reconnect (I wish it would!).

The pain is that it's so difficult to reconnect the Prius once you're driving, since it prevents you from doing anything while driving (you have to reconnect while stopped at a stop light, for example). Therefore, my recommendation would be to prevent your phone from going into this standby mode while you're driving (unless you can configure it to always keep bluetooth on).

One's a Palm, one's a Motorola. They're not going to behave the same.

This doesn't hold true with my Palm 700WX - it connects when it's powered off just like it does powered on. The phone sometimes has a mind of it's own and decides to randomly turn bluetooth off, but that's another story..

My Sony Erikson works fine. The Bluetooth power save mode on that phone limits the Bluetooth to one connection at a time, which is fine for the Prius. If that's not good enough, I can turn off the Bluetooth power save and connect to multiple units.

Thats our experience with both of our Treo 650s. Our screens are almost always off when we power up Carmyne and the connection is made nearly every time. They will even connect when they are "powered off" (disconnected from service), of course you can't make a call without connecting to your service provider.
