    Hello All,

My 07 Prius Touring will have around 4000 miles on it when I drive across the country from California to Georgia in July. Would it be better to get the first oil change at 4000 miles before I leave? Or wait until I get there with around 7000 miles on it?

Also, am considering using Amsoil synthetic for the first oil change. Any thoughts (not so much about the oil itself -I know it's good stuff - but the prospect of using it for the first oil change)?

    Thanks

Change your oil before the trip. And, switching to Amsoil, or any pure synthetic, at the first oil change is a good move. Don't bother listening to any of the hoohah about breaking-in the engine with regular (dino) oil. Any such suggestion is pure rubbish.

Yes, get the oil changed earlier rather than later. If there is anything nasty in your factory oil (which is highly unlikely) you don't want to keep that nastiness an extra 3K miles. I have a feeling the Toyota warranty claims department would look more kindly on a 4K v. 7K mile change too.

Chances of hurting your engine by not changing your oil before the big trip are remote to say the least, long trips are good for the engine. Warranty wise, yes you should change the oil and filter before the trip. Amsoil make very good oil and filters, I am running a Mobil1 filter (M1-209) and Amsoil XL7500 5w30 that I had on hand from my last car. Make the change early enough so that any problems such as: a loose or leaky drain plug, leaky filter, improper oil level, can be delt with.
    Have a safe trip!

I just got the Mobil M1-103 filter for the car (that's what the auto parts shop manual said to get) to go with the Amsoil 5w30 that I had left over from my RSX. I'll change it in July prior to my big move. Thanks to all for your input.
