Hi... I'm looking to get XM radio installed in my 2006 Prius, and I've started talking to the dealer about it, but I just want to make sure I'm doing everything right before I drop that kind of $$.

I want it to be fully integrated with the car's controls (displaying on the screen, steering wheel controls, all that stuff), which is why I figured it would make more sense for the dealer to install it. They said that I need to purchase two parts-- the XM tuner and the XM kit. Does this make sense? Is there a reason I need both of these? It sounds like the parts will cost me about $400 (not including labor)... is this the going rate, or should I try to buy them elsewhere?

I would love any suggestions as to things I should watch out for, things I should double-check with the dealer before they install it, that kind of stuff. Also, if other people have done this before, how much did it cost you?

    Thanks!

PS. If there are existing threads on this subject, I apologize... I tried to search, but XM is too short to be allowed as a search term...

I bought the kit from the Priuschat store for 260 dollars. You do need both the tuner and the install kit. Save yourself 140 dollars and buy it here. Click on the "Prius Accessories" link at the top of the screen...

By the way, its easy to install. The only annoying part is one stupid clip holding the A-pillar molding on.

We just had the dealer install XM today and we're concerned about the fact that the wiring from the antenna is visible from its location on the right side of the dash backward toward the passenger. It dives under the dash after about ten inches of exposed wiring running alongside the window. Is this standard procedure?

Also, in our installation, the antenna is on a small (2"x2") piece of adhesive-backed plastic. Is this normal?

XM was OEM installed in our Acura MDX, with no unsightly wires, so we were a bit surprised.

Hell to the 2 new XM installers....

    1. To the starter of this thread, don't waste your cash at the dealer as your first responder stated, buy it online. Very easy to install.

    2. You risk the dealership installing the dang antenna on the front windshield, for best reception it should be on the roof. Very easy to install, do it yourself.

For the person that had it installed alread, I will include threads to my experiences with this item :) You can still use that same antenna and route it to a better reception location and a more professional look than on the windshield. Hit me up if you have questions.

Ok, of course I can't find my other thread now, to make a long story short, that location of the antenna on the windshield is where Toyota tells them to install it, just nuts. Anyways, you can use that same antenna and route it back if you don't like the look, fairly easy to do, esp since you won't need to get into the dash at all. :)
