This is exactly my philosophy. The most miles I ever put on a tank was 502. Average miles per tank is 419. No complaints.

Havn't EVER seen any one on PC YET claim they hadn't gone over 30 miles when the last pip begins to blink. But . . . like getting struck by ligntning while indoors, it IS theoreticly posible.

It's easy but miss, but I've mentioned a number of times that I ran out of gas in less than 15 miles after the last pip started blinking.

I've also gone as much as 40 miles past that point without running out of gas. I possibly could have gone more, but didn't feel like chancing it.

I guess I like to "live dangerously" lol. I often drive up to 25 miles once the last pip starts flashing, since gas is wayyyy cheaper two towns north of where I live. Crazy, I know!

i don't necessarily want to live dangerously.... but ya.... gas is cheaper "down the hill" at sam's club or even in the town 20 miles away!!!! i'm so used to pinching a penny on gas when we're headed that way anyways....

Doesn't that make you just a lil mad that a town just a few miles away has cheaper prices? It sure makes me mad! I mean I can understand a lil bit of variance between states, but neighboring towns??

actually makes me more than a lil mad.... and what's even worse.... is gas stations within the same town have use HUGE variations in price..... absolutely RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i understand the whole sam's being cheaper.... they specify three different prices: anyone price (highest), walmart/sam's gift card price (middle), and sam's club member price (lowest, of course).....

but for am/pm to be several cents lower than the gas station across the street...... UGh!

lol.... at least getting there is down hill.... literally!!!!!!! (i jest.... no doubt we'll add some gas just to be safe and make sure we can make it to sam's!)

Yikes! Just 5 miles sometimes? That is frightening. I saw mine start to blink, I probably drove 10-15 b/c at first it was inconvenient to stop while taking our son to school, then once I got back in I forgot for a while. I would hate for my first time running out of gas to be in a Prius. How embarrassing!

I did it. Like an idiot, I ran out of gas.

The last pip blinked on the way home of a 25 mile commute, and I failed to gas up. On the way back in the next morning at about 20 miles into the drive (total blinking pip aprox. 25 miles) I went into a glide with no pedal power. Luckily, I was able to pull over on the freeway. After I called for a friend to bring gas, I realized - hey there is electric power, so I waited for a lull and and drove slowley in ev mode off the freeway tand made it to a gas station - after calling and putting th efriend on stand-by. The car started up fine. And I learned a big lesson.

Carrying gas inside the car is a very risky thing to do. If the can is not sealed tight, you can get gas fumes, and if it is sealed tight it could burst due to internal pressure. Gas comes out of the underground tank cold. It will them warm up and raise the pressure inside the can as you carry it in your car.

And even when you do find out how far you drove, it might not be the same next time, as a poster above noted.

I cannot offer a link to the post, but someone once reported going FIVE MILES on the blinking pip before running out of gas!

If the fill-up takes ten gallons and the price difference is a nickel, that's 50 cents. If you fill up once a week, you've saved seven cents a day. Even if the difference is a quarter, you're up to 35 cents a day. Against the hassle of running out, it does seem extreme.

Since gas prices are only going up and UP and UPPPPPPP, it seems it'd be most cost-effective to fill up as often as possible so you keep a "less expensive" fuel filling your tank.

    This is NOT CORRECT!!!

You may have 30-50 miles left...or you may run out of fuel in the next minute or two.

Don't *ever* run the tank down to where the last pip is flashing!!!

    Here's what I think:

    Three pips=you're running low
    Two pips= get gas immediately
One pip=Give serious thought to where you're going to pull off of the road when the car dies, and if your cell phone is charged up to call for roadside assistance.

Oh, and try not to coax the car to the nearest gas station on electric only! It's tempting but can mess up the traction battery.

I KEEP SEEING PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT RUNNING THEIR GAS TANK LOW. I AM TELLING YOU THIS IS NOT GOOD FOR YOUR ENGINE OR YOUR FUEL PUMP WHICH IS IN THE TANK. IT IS BEST TO ALWAYS HAVE ENOUGH FUEL IN THE TANK TO COVER THE PUMP. ALSO RUNNING THE TANK LOW WILL SUCK UP DIRT AND SUCH FROM THE GAS OVER TIME. GAS IS NOT PURE, IT IS FULL OF ALL KINDS OF FOREIGN MATERIALS. ALSO READ YOUR CAR MANUAL. IT RECOMMENDS NOT TO GO BELOW 1/4 OF A TANK. THAT WOULD BE ABOUT 4 BARS OR PIPS AS YOU CALL THEM.
