Thank God I was able to sell my truck to a private party (no trade-in!) AND I was able to find the Prius I wanted all in one weekend! One thing I wish Toyota offered is a rear seat DVD system. I have two young kids and these things are a Godsend... I am hoping to pickup my Prius this week from San Jose, CA and drive it back home to Idaho. A mere 15 hours and 1000 miles! :-( Well worth it though!

Has anyone added one on yet?
Where can I get one installed quickly, yet quality?
Any problem with adding one that anyone can find? I would like to get two monitors in the headrest if possible, and if not, than overhead will be just fine.

    Thank you!

I haven't had it done, but a local car audio place that did my window tint offered it to me. I use my vehicle for work, so it really wasn't necessary. When I mentioned how, he said they had to fully replace the head rests because they were too small to carry any type of screen, but I could get bigger ones and do dual overheads that wouldn't obstruct my rearview. It was expensive, but less than other cars since the hatchback has lots of space to install electronics wiring and the battery is in the back. He said they wouldn't even have had to get into the front seats or the dash, and that would have made him happy....if only I had chosen to have him do it.

You may have to do a search, but I did see pictures of a headrest one on this site.

Thanks! I've been searching online and haven't found too much specifically relating to the Prius. I'm not in a rush. I will use the car mostly for commuting too. But, we may take a trip or two with it since the mileage is nice.
Well, whatever I do find that is viable, I will post!
    Thanks again

I have 2 boys and wanted a DVD player . . . thought it would be impossible to hang one from the ceiling bc it would completely block the view . . . so for temporary fix, I bought a DVD bag from circuit city that hangs in the middle of the seats and have a DVD player on it [actually it's not bad] . . . the one thing that i do not like is that every time the car shuts off, the DVD starts all over again [runs on lighter]. . . very annoying . . . I am also in the market for a solution [don't know if there is a dvd player that will keep your place after car is shut down].

I ordered one with the car from the dealership (which I am still waiting on  ). The system is the Invision Revolution II which replaces the headrests of the vehicle. You can watch the same or different videos as the DVD player is built into the screen. Myron & Davis also offers a version for the Prius.

As soon as we get ours installed (whenever that may be) I will post pics of it.

Cool. Thanks for the info. I will look for the Invision Revolution II online. I put a call into my dealer to see what they offer & am still awaiting a callback. I look forward to the pictures!

I got the car back tonight with the headrest DVDs. I tried to upload the pics I took but this site is not letting me do that. I will start a new thread when they enable the gallery.

The current generation Highlander headrests fit the Prius, so do some other models. Might be able to find them cheaper than a model labled for a "Prius".

How about 2 portable 9" DVD player strap on the headrest? Cost less than $400 and it serve the kids well. It play DVD and even DVIX/MPEG4/AVI. The kids can also play it's own favorite DVD.

We got a portable DVD player from Target for under $100 that has worked just great so far. It can attach to the back of a headrest (which is how we set it up) or hang between the two front seats if 2 kids want to see it (our youngest is still in a rear-facing seat so haven't tried that yet). It can run off the car's 12V DC outlet or household 110V AC and has a battery that is good for a couple of hours so that it continues to run when the car is powered down. It has worked flawlessly for us on 3 road trips now and keeps our 3.5 year old very happy. It was also easy to take out and connect to the TV at out family's camp which doesn't have a regular DVD player. Great system for the money.

BTW, separate players for each kid seems like madness to me. But then again I haven't gotten to the point where they're arguing over what to watch yet. And if you asked me before we had kids, I would have said that a rear-seat DVD player would never be necessary. So we'll see!

ETA: Found the one we got at target's website. The brand is TruTech. Here is the link. We paid $79 and it came with the carrying case/headrest attachments. Reading the reviews it looks like it has died early for some people, like within a year or less. We've only had it for 2 months so I really can't comment on that. But in general, I'm guessing that it will last longer for most people. Only the one's who have problems typically bother to write a review. Also some people mentioned it skipping a lot. We haven't had that problem at all. Other's mentioned the battery power not working or not lasting a full 2 hours. We haven't tested the duration, but it has worked fine for us when needed and trasferred over from plug-in mode and back without skipping a frame multiple times.

I had an Audiovox portable DVD player that hung from the headrests in our 4Runner. It worked great but the cables got in the way everytime the kids got in and out of the truck. My wife saw the integrated headrest DVD and said she had to have it.

That's OK. There are several out there that are 1/2 DIN and could likely fit in the cubby under the stereo.
This is a good find... Only thing is, I have the "dark grey" leather. Matching that could be problematic.

I also tried the hanging thingy, but returned it after a test drive because it didn't sit very securely
and there were extra straps hanging everywhere. So I bought this other unit from Best Buy, and so far
have found it to work very well. It's stable enough and doesn't block much of the rear view (only the
lower half of the hatch which I don't really need anyway).

I hate the fact that my DVD player goes back to the beginning of the DVD every time you turn it off
and restart. I wonder if the more expensive headrest types have the same issue.

Bonus: For those with baby strollers, here's a simple yet excellent mounting solution:

(Even if you don't have a stroller, you still could use this to hang other things I guess)

The headrest DVD I have does not lose its place when the car is shut off.

Hey Zen, aren't you worried that setup could be a hazard? (not baggin on it, just wondering if it is very secure). ;)

I did talk to the folks who sell the actual unit (Invision) that Family Hybrid has and they wanted $1900 installed.
I think I can do it myself but they still want $1750 (I think).

With the size of the stock headrest, I don't think I can just insall monitors into them... Too small.
Any thoughts on that? Seems that for headrest DVD Visualogic and the Invision are the only ones I can find that will match the dark grey leather... If I could find someone who sells blank headrests, I would put together a system with two monitors, one DVD in the cubby, and headhones and call it good...

The cradle is quite sturdy and requires tightening a few screws to assemble.

Also, you have to hook it in the right way to prevent the thing from flying backward in a collision of any sort. The instructions are very clear about this part. If dislodged in a violent collision it "may" come loose and fly forward. But of course there's no one in the middle front of the car, only the MFD.

The headrest DVDs seem to be too much of an overkill for my family situation. I'd rather spend the money on the stereo system. And perhaps unlock the MFD later on to feed a TV/video source to it and use the upgraded stereo system for surround sound effects... :)

You mean overhead car dvd monitor? It is commonly installed in cars. Cheap and a lot of fun. Try to find it at
