Land Cruiser has IDENTICAL MFD with backup camera...

    So, I noticed the Land Cruiser has the identical (almost, the ONLY difference is that there is only one "Info" screen showing MPG) MFD as the Prius! The ironic part is that the MPG screen is there, but the one at the dealership showed the average for the tank so far was 3.5 MPG!

    However, this vehicle has the backup camera! So, perhaps it's plug and play on the Prius? Is there a missing (or open) connector on the back of the Prius MFD?

    That is interesting. In the Prius you need more than just the camera to plug into the MFD. There's and intermediate computer that sits just behind the left rear passenger seat in the sidewall. I think it then plugs into the NAV computer which relays to the MFD.

    If we can confirm that it is, indeed, the same camera and computer relay that is use on the Japanese Prius the possibility exists that we could adapt it, much like the Solara Integrated XM Radio was, into the Prius. It would be a little trickier install, but probably not all that bad.

    Maybe PriusXM or Coastal Dave can check into this and create a new market. It WILL, be expensive though, I bet.

    Yes, someone with techinfo.toyota.com access please look up the info for the LandCruiser? You can check the Wiring Diagram or the main manual...

    A "back-up" camera is poor design. Karl Smith designed, patentened and demonstrated a flat mirror system in the early 1970s (a feature article in Time magazine). The periscopic mirror sat along the top of the front windshield. Visiblity, confirmed by traffic engineering firms, is excellent, with no blind spots, except under the vehicle. When you put your arm out the driver's door window, you see your arm in the rear view mirror!

    No add-ons, gimmicks or electronics required - just three pieces of plate glass mirror. A minimum of 120 degree viewshed to the rear of a vehicle. Karl Smith also adapted his periscopic mirror system to the double-decker shuttle buses that ran in Yosemite Valley inside Yosemite National Park.

    Karl removed outside mirrors to demonstrate the excellent visibility and to reinforce how a roll bar and seat belt system can better protect driver and passengers, without obstructing the need for good visibility to the sides and rear.

    Amazing, it has only taken 33 years to take a giant step backward and market a device to the public - trying to make the public think a backward looking camera is something new, improved and contributes to safety.

    There's an open white 6 pin connector (3x2) on the top and and an open black 7 (?) pin connector on the bottom. Don't know what either are for. Interesting that the KW-1275A A/V cable is also 6 pins. ( http://www.fujitsu-ten.co.jp/eclipse/other...1275a/main.html )

    (edited 10/1/04 to remove XM radio comment - I forgot that cable doesn't go to the display but rather to the 12 pin connector on the back of the radio)

    My MFD has the 'slug' problem of being slow etc When it was in at the dealer, he said about a week to order a replacement, then said its the same MFD unit as the klugger!?

    I'm not sure if this is a help or not.

    When my system was offline, the NAV unit option in the diag menu was greyed out, like the backup camera. So I think its plug and play. When the MFD was working the nav unit menu came back and when it wasn't it went away again. Refer to this picture

    Yes, I've noticed this too. My next step is to compare Wiring Diagrams betweent the L/C and the Prius to see what other components (if any) are in the L/C and to see what the pinouts are. (Should I excite everyone some more by alerting them to the fact that the L/C has DVD video on the MFD via external changer)? I'll check this out as well.

    May be good to get the wiring diagram for the prius in a market that has the backup camera and/or DVD option.

    Please note though, the backup camera option on the Prius was integrated with the self parking feature. One would wonder if the self parking feature is programmed into the MFD, the camera ECU, or in the power steering ECU, or even a combination of the 3.
    Repair manual mentioned calibration of the steering for the backup camera option, so I would venture to guess the parking feature is in the MFD.

    What else is in the modules that we don't have access to? would be neat if we could get access to the programs. But I am sure that is proprietary.

    Nah, the auto parking ECU is a seperate tool. In Japan it is installed in the sidewall behind the left side rear passenger seat. What isn't clear is if that is needed for the back-up camera alone...most think that it is not.
