We have a Prius and an Insight that we use daily. We also have a truck that has sat in the driveway for months, and a motorcycle we use less than once a month for a fun ride, and an old RV that hasn't been out in years.

I am new to this site also, 'cause I bot a Prius, and you stirred out the patriotic cause in me.
I would like to know when you purchased a 'green' vehicle to fight the cause?
And just to brag more about your topic: We were one of the 1st ones in our neighborhood, and 1st one of our friends to purchase a 'green' vehicle. Our 1st one was and still is, a Honda Civic Hybrid. Yes, you read it right. We purchased our HCH early 2003, when the dealers were giving the car away, 'cause hybrids were not real popular. Our friends laughed at us, when we showed the car off. Guess who is laffing now?
Just reading the posts here, my wife and I must be in the minority. It seems we are the only ones with a 2-car hybrid 'green' car family. By the way, I am 74, but still very able and capable to understand newer stuff in the world, such as how the world is getting warmer, etc, and ways to help.

This is when you skip that thread. Seriously, how does actually having a family and other concerns lessen a person's green-ness? I'm certainly far from perfect, but that's exactly the point. EVERYONE must try to do what they can, or green-ness is pointless. To piss on people because they haven't found that dream job down the block from the perfect house, and make enough to buy solar panels and an electric car, that's just dumb.

BTW, not trying to goad anyone, really. I respect the hyper-greens, and am jealous. In fact, I'm applying for a job closer to home (although I LOVE my current job). But we need to applaud EVERY Prius buyer...

Believe that point was made in my next paragraph that you omitted.

"...a single new American born in the 1990s will be responsible, over his or her life, for 22 million pounds of liquid waste and 2.2 million pounds each of solid waste and atmospheric waste. He or she will have a lifetime consumption of 4,000 barrels of oil, 1.5 million pounds of minerals and 62,000 pounds of animal products that will entail the slaughter of 2,000 animals."

This is why I'm a vegetarian, drive a Prius, and try to conserve energy in any other way possible. It's also a big reason why we have only one child (at least right now).

I would take your quote to suggest that the solution is to have no children, since this would decrease the consumption by 100% for the next generation. Suicide would stop consumption immediately. If environmental concerns are your ONLY concerns, then these are logical steps...

My point is still valid that we should encourage, rather than criticize, people who are making good decisions, even if they are limited decisions. Even if its a small DECREASE in the overall use/waste, it's a step in the right direction. Congratulating them, and giving more "green" suggestions, gets them on board to learn more and act.

If you turn up your nose at those "token" Prius owners, then they will think, "Why the hell should I listen to those snobs?" and stop paying attention to anything important you have to say.

EDIT: Sorry, Marci. I just read the link. If these are your views, then you have absolutely no chance in hell of convincing ANYONE, and, therefore, a ZERO percent chance of achieving the goal stated. It's a pipe dream (and a disgusting one). Never thought I'd meet a person who could make me feel "conservative"

Ummm...I'm a native Floridian, so you be careful yourself....

As far as the schmazzel (Yiddush for born LOSER!) with the original post, my '98 Mits. Mirage was getting up in miles (110K) and it was time for a new car. Hence I bought my Prius. I do not own another car, nor care to.

It's a joke concerning the recent trollish behavior we've had from 2 Floridians. ;)

How dare you even own a vehicle! If you really cared about global problems, you would bike/walk/ride public transit to work. Not to mention wasting electricity to power a computer to spend time on an internet message board. I bet you probably own a wasteful TV too!

Not that you are reading this, but boy, you sure are ridiculous!

Yeah, fun responding to an OP that doesn't care. But what the heck - we're here for the community, right?

Daniel beat me to it, though it was my schtick first! Yes we have two cars. But the Prius IS our gas guzzler. Says so right on it.

I ride my bicycle more miles than I drive any car. The Rav4EV is our daily driver, and the Prius - the only thing in my garage that uses any gasoline - is used about once/month. Congrats to the OP for buying a gasoline car to drive every day on the way to saving the planet while the rest of us schmucks are just hypocrates.

Traded in a 2001 Highlander for a Prius, it's my ONLY vehicle. I don't miss the Highlander at all. The Prius is roomy enough and i don't mind "riding" lower in the Prius, and the mileage is SO much better. :)
