My car will be delivered sooner that estimated.

I was looking at the Prius Warranty Info on the Toyota Site.

    36 months/36,000 miles Basic
    Hybrid Components 8 years/100,000 miles
    Powertrain 60 Months/60,000 miles

    Question ?
Why would I need to purchase an Extended Warranty ?? (seems like it is covered pretty well)

The good news is you don't need to decide immediately (even if your dealer tells you you do). You can purchase the extended waranty anytime before the 36000 mile basic waranty expires. You will probably know by then if you want it or not.

Also note that you can buy the Toyota waranties thru this site considerably below list price and most dealers will try to charge what they think that they can get. Check it out

Only reason for me getting the extended warranty is, I put on a LOT of miles, and will blow through the factory long before I finish paying for it, and since this car has a ton of electronics and not so ordinary components, I wanted the peace of mind that the warranty will give me for 100,000 miles on the entire car. Considering it only cost me $726 for the warranty, one repair job on the computer after warranty could cost much more than that. I had a 92 Crown Vic that had a fuel pump go bad and destroy the wiring harness in the trunk along with it, cost was well over $2200, thankfully I had an extended warranty on it, cost me all of $50.

ACD, how did you get your extended warranty for $726? I thought the "best" extended warranty was through the PriusChat guy for $900, which is much better than the dealerships. If you can give me that contract information, I will buy it from your guy

Geico and other insurance companies will give you bumper-to-bumper insurance that covers basically everything the extended warranty would cover (maybe more) for around $30 a year. There's a deductible... but it's still the best deal you can get, as far as I can tell.

When the dealer starts pushing the extended warranty I reply, "If the car is so unreliable that the extended warranty is a good deal then I shouldn't be buying the car."

I just got my prius a few days, I paid $2400 to extend to 100,000 miles through the dealer, is this a bad deal? Can I back out on the warranty? I know there is soething wrong when they keep pushing the extended warranty.

you have 60 days to get a refund..... so definitely do it and then come back here and use the link to get the PC price! (don't listen to their hardsell of "what a mistake you are making")

Thanks for the info, I make them to re-write the contract and took te extended warranty out.
Will it cost more to get the 7 yrs/100,000 miles if I buy it towards the end of the 36,000 miles mark?

I think Troy has only increased the price by $5 since he first started selling the warranties to PriusChat members. BTW you can get other year/mileage combinations from Troy depending on your driving habits. I drive a lot, so I got a 6-year/100,000-mile warranty for $875. You can also get 6- and 7-year warranties with only 75,000 miles. BTW I got my warranty at 35,800 miles.

Shall I assume you have tested this statement?

Is there anywhere we can find out what this bumper to bumper warranty covers and would it require visual inspection?

Wow, you paid $2400 for the ext warranty? I thought I got ripped off big time when I paid $1800 6 months ago for 7yr/100K. My car got rear-ended last month, total loss. I bought another Prius, and I cancelled my prepaid maintenance ($1200) and ext warranty ($1800) yesterday. I'll get some pro-rated amount for both.

I have the coverage. But if by testing it, you mean have I had to use it - no (keeping fingers crossed now after saying that). I am sure there are things they will exclude, but reading some of the threads here it seems like people with the Toyota extended warranty have found themselves paying for repairs they thought it would or should cover.

I'd say the best way to find out for yourself what it covers would be to call your insurance company and see what they offer and what is required. I know the Geico one is only available to the original owner of a new car. I don't know that the rate I got - $15/6 months - is a flat rate or if it varies in any way by driver or location. Also there is a $250 deductible. Also, it does not cover wear and tear or rust, which I think are specifically excluded from the Toyota warranty as well.
