XM Satellite Radio has a promotion for existing subscribers where you can renew your subscription for a year at only $60 for the year. Call 800-321-7117, and tell them you got a mailer about the promotion.

Not sure how long this promotion will last, but it's real, it works and it works for multiple accounts...even those with multi year contracts already. They just apply a credit toward the cheaper rate.

Hi Evan, Thanks for the tip.

I have 2 XM Radios, my Prius XM car kit and a Delphi Sky-Fi for the office. They only will give this deal to people with OEM kits. So anybody who got XM from John(Prius XM) or Coastal Etech get in line for this deal. I just paid my quarterly for both radios and they are crediting me for the amount I paid on the Prius XM and I get the rest of the year for 40$ on that radio.

    Thanks again Evan!

My Family Motto is " Going Broke Saving Money"! Thus I can't resist a deal when I see it.

    Peace,

    Fr. Bill

    Fr. Bill,
I got the deal for myself (OEM XM) and my wife (XM Commander--non-OEM FM modulated radio). I'd call back and double check that you can't get it for both. They gave me no problem at all.

Yea, I love that I'm getting 2 subscriptions for the price of one for a year.

I'm mostly deaf, but nevertheless get nervous when my car's missing some gadget - and this deal looks very good. I can rationalize it by thinking that 10% of the time there's someone in the car with me - someone with normal hearing...

Can I simply order Coastal's kit *plus* a desktop receiver from someone (but which?), and activate both of them on one subscription? If so, what will be my annual rate considering this promotion?

    Thanks, gurus.

Seperate units have to be activated seperately--thus you're charged for each XM radio. The second one is usually just $7/month, but with the current deal both would be $5 each/month.

Ok - then I'll order a Coastal kit, but what should I pick for a desktop unit (for my son)? Any advice?

    $120/year seems fine.

I'm not an expert on this so hopefully others will chime in with good advice. But, the Ski-Fi and recent Ski-Fi 2 (with TIVO-like pause and replay functionality) are the kind that you move the face/main unit from car to jam-box to whatever and seem to be very popular.

AFAIK, the Roady and XM Commanders do not offer that. Whether there are dedicated desktop units I don't know.

Evan you are right about the Ski-Fi. I have Jon's unit installed in my car and bought a separate Ski-Fi and boom box for the house. I could take that and pop it in a car if I had the hardware in the car--I don't need it because I have the unit in the car. My husband doesn't want the XM in his car, the '02, and besides, I want the boom box for me in the house.

If you're looking for a cheaper option, there's always the XMPCR, which connnects directly to your computer. Since it's still all satellite-controlled, it means you don't even need an internet connection on your computer to run it (nor will it slow down any connection you have). I haven't tried one yet myself, but my partner plans on getting one soon - the great part is that they're only $50, but the downer is that they aren't found in stores, I think the only place you can get one is online.

It's the ideal solution if you're looking to have it just at the computer and don't have a need for it elsewhere. (Personally, I have the integrated kit in the Prius, and a skyfi with the boombox, and I love having both - one for work, one for the car!)

In that vein, This Software allows you to record from your XMPCR with a timer function. It's being contested in court (RIAA things again), but still works at this time.

    Thanks for the tip, Evan!

I was able to get the discount on my Prius radio, but not on my portable Roady II. The customer service representative checked with her supervisor, then advised me that the promotion only applies to factory installed units.

My second unit is billed at the $6.99 rate so it's not really worth pursuing any further.

You're welcome, I must've gotten lucky and had a rep that didn't know the details!

Slightly off-topic: If any of the Roady 2 folks want to take the jump, sell the Roady, and upgrade to the Toyota integrated model, now's the time!

There's a nationwide shortage of Roady 2's. I bought mine at Circuit City a two weeks ago for $119. I dropped in today for a second one, and they were sold out. So is everyone else in the area, as well as on-line.

The last few new Roady 2's have sold on EBay for $250!!

(If anyone in the Seattle area wants to make their quick EBay fortune, I saw some available for pickup in Seattle Circuit City stores....)

And, apparently the XMPCR is now gone partly because of them phasing it out because of the inability to update the software, but I think also due partly to the Time Trax software issue - so, if you want an XMPCR now, be forewarned, instead of paying $50, you'll be paying about $350 on ebay for it.

Damn, and I had been waiting and waiting to get the XMPCR, now my time is up. This could've been great at work. :|

I tried this and they told me that they would only give the discount for factory installed units in GM cars.

Per the XM rep I talked to today, Toyota may be offering a one month free with free activation trial. XM radio, if you call direct, also has a current promo, 40% off for three months, then the normal rate.

    Owe you a drink, doctor!

My wife's Accord, which we bought last spring, came with a free month (or 3?) of XM service. We let it expire, partly because XM never sent us anything (or called) to enable us to purchase the service (!), but mostly because my wife liked XM, but not enough to pay for it.

$60 for a year seems pretty good to me, so I just called them and activated it on a credit card. Took a few tries, but the rep "found" her car in his computer after we tried both of our names and phone numbers (has to be based on whatever we put on the car paperwork at Honda, I would think). He did note that the account was inactive, but happily gave me the year for $60.

    Thanks, Evan!

Oops, I meant to add that I did tell the rep that I'd received the mailer.

He asked if I had it with me, but didn't seem to care that I did not. I think he just wanted it to help him locate my account.

Here's a tip to make getting this promotion a little easier for the rest of you.

Allegedly, if you got this mailer, which apparently has only been mailed to "qualified customers", it had a dedicated phone number to call just for this promotion. If you call on the main 800 number, they'll give you a hard time.

Soooo, call (800) 892-5400 and tell them you have the mailer for the $60/year promotion. Since you called on the "secret" phone number, they don't even question it!

I just had the quarterly $29.97 billed to my card, so they just put through another $30 charge and I'm now paid for a full year!

    Mark

    Much thanks Evan!!!
