I reset my "maintenance required" light by getting maintenance, it seemed like it came on automatically at 5000 miles. I was in the middle of nowhere at the time, wondering what sort of maintenance was required.

Tidbits of owner information I've gathered along the way, including this how-to, can be found in this document... http://john1701a.com/prius/prius-userguide.htm

The short answer is just hold down the ODO button when starting.

LOL John after all that is never dawned on me that it was so simple. For the others that asked, the light starts blinking at 4,500 miles to remind you of oil change being due at 5,000mi interval at 5,000 mi. it stays on steady to remind you to get an oil change, it stays on till you or the mechanice resets it

I got my first service & the light came on 50 miles later. Had to call to find out what was wrong - they told me they must have forgotten to reset it & told me how to do it myself. Wouldn't it be great if it reset automatically when you have service done, instead of expecting the mechanic to remember?

I have been setting the maintenance for next oil change. Maintenance message came on. It turned out to be for the oil filter so I reset that. Maintenance light came on later so I deleted both of them. Need to know how to reset both so light doesn't come bck on.

Yes it is! Just got this from it

How do I turn off the Flashing Maintenance light (oil change reminder)?

The oil change light will start flashing 4500 miles after the last reset to remind you that an oil change is coming up. Once at 5000 miles after the last reset, it stays on. If you change the oil yourself, or the dealer forgets to turn the light off, rather than taking it back to the dealer, do the following:

Turn the power switch IG-ON and make sure that the ODO/TRIP meter is displaying the odometer.
    Turn the power switch OFF.
While pushing the ODO button, turn the power switch IG-ON.
The reminder light will flash until the reset is completed.
The reset is complete when the reminder light turns OFF. Release the ODO button.
After the reset, the ODO/TRIP meter displays as a set of zeros for 1 second, then displays the your normal odometer mileage.

The way to reset the maintenance light is explained on Pages 122,123 of your Owners Manual.

I just leave the light on; doesn't bother me. I change the oil every 5000 miles; 5, 10, 15, 20... it's easy to remember.

ya so do i... it isnt very obtrusive. seems to me mine came on way before 4500 miles, but not sure. i actually had my oil changed at 4890 miles and im positive that the maintainence light was on at least a couple of weeks.
