FYI, I discovered recently that my basic option (no MP3) Prius can display track titles from audio CDs.
Apparently it's called "CD-text" or "CUE sheet" and is a standard supported by Sony for several years.

Only one of my (relatively few) commercial CDs has this - a compilation album released by Sony in 2003.
But I was able to make my computer software (Linux "cdrecord") insert text into ones I burn myself.
There's 29 characters each for album title and track title, and it's not affected by the stupid "you're moving so I won't show you the message" bug that affects FM radio.

I've done that with a couple CDs using my Apple iMac and iTunes. It lets you do this too. Mostly I use my iPod with Dice which also shows the info.

Nero also has an option to burn CD Text. It's nice.

iTunes 7 will do CD-Text, but only with certain models of CD burners. The option is not available on my MacBook Pro's SuperDrive, for example.

Hmmm, that's really weird. I'll post that on the Apple message board and see what people say. I won't include your name.

Update: It works on my 2007 24" intel Core2Duo iMac and also my 2000 800mhz G4 iMac "lamp."

I've put your note (without your name) on two different places on the messages boards and will post their reply when it comes.

For those with Mac (or Windows?) computers with iTunes you can do this in iTunes by going to Preferences-Advanced-Burning-Audio CD-Include CD Text.

I don't know what to make of it. I haven't gotten any relevant responses.

    My mistake!

I had left the external Lite-On burner selected in iTunes on my MacBook Pro. As soon as I selected the internal SuperDrive (the Matsushita UJ-857D) the "CD Text" option became selectable.

I can tell you that you can burn audio CDs with iTunes on a MacBook Pro with a SuperDrive and view the CD-TEXT information on the MFD. I just tried it again to make sure. My SuperDrive is a Matshita UJ-857D, if that matters. I think that the reason you are not getting any relevant responses is because most people are saying to themselves, Wth of course that works.

Here is a little history: iTunes was not able to include CD-TEXT information until version 7.0. Starting with that version there is a preference "Include CD Text" that had to be checked. It is not checked by default. However, CDs burned with iTunes 7.0 only showed track information on the 2006 and later Priuses (the ones that introduced ability to play MP3 CDs and had an AUX jack). That is because there are two different standards for CD-TEXT and the 2004-2005 Prius used one and Apple used the other. iTunes fixed this problem at around version 7.0.2, probably by burning both kinds of CD-TEXT information. So the latest version of iTunes should burn discs with CD-TEXT information that is visible on the 2004 and later Prius if the preference is set to do so. I have never heard of a burner that didn't burn CD-TEXT, but I suppose it's possible. But I'm confident that any reasonably recent Mac (which includes all MacBook Pros) should be able to do it.

I would like to add that I always use copies of my CDs in the car. That way I get the CD-TEXT information (which is almost never put onto commercial CDs for some reason) and it doesn't matter if they get scratched or melted or lost. Also, the very best general purpose CD/DVD authoring application available anywhere is Toast for the Mac. iTunes is OK for burning, and the price is right, but if you're into this stuff at all I recommend getting Toast.

I updated to iTunes 7.2 on my music computer (a 333MHz PowerBook G3 "Lombard" laptop). Unfortunately, since that computer only runs 10.3 Panther, burning of CD-TEXT is unavailable. (The preferences screen even says "Requires 10.4.") Shucks.
