    bump....

anyone replace the pcv valve? I was thinking of doing this at my upcoming 60k but wondered if anyone had any tips. I assume it must be connected to the valve cover somewhere. Maybe this would be the time to download those schematics from the toyota website... or maybe just bite the bullet and have the dealer replace it.

    thanks all,

it's screwed into the valve cover- either on the back or on the side. can't recall offhand this exact second. it will be on the transmission side near #4 cylinder.

Thanks for the quick reply galaxee. It's nice to be able to do some of the easy maintenance myself. Leave the big stuff and periodic inspections (I never know all the things to look for) to the dealer.

you'll wanna use a 22 or 24 mm wrench on that, and it's on the side of the valve cover toward the back, on the driver's side. good luck :)

    Hi everyone,

Has anyone done this(replaced a pcv valve)? I have looked at the backside of the valve cover on the driver's side and there's lots of stuff there, I am not quite sure where the pcv valve is. Does this require removing the wiper cowl etc or can you just take the bolts out of the relay block and move it out of the way and that's enough to get at it? Thanks for any help or pictures.

yep, take out the relay block and cowl, and that black harness protector next to the inverter coolant reservoir. it's the only thing really there. it's green, there's a hose stuck on the end of it, and it's screwed into the side of the valve cover. oh, and it's big. shouldn't be too hard once you get all the stuff out of the way.

Thanks for the info. Any idea how much the dealer gets for that job? It seems like a lot of work just to replace a PCV. Do you think it is really necessary or is it likely to last the life of the car?

Dennis: what lead u to think about replacing the PCV?

A lot of time that thing lets in dirt which could lead to some bad UOA from what I've read.

DH recommends changing it at 60k intervals. i'll have to ask about how much they make on it.

Yeah the part is cheap enough - it's digging the hole that costs. Can't find labor hours for that in the 01-03 parts list, but the valve cover gasket is 1.7 hrs. So it's something like that.

Interesting thread. Know of anyone who has had a problem with the PCV valve?

Also how much does the dealer charge to replace the valve.

I'm almost at 60K miles and have nearly gone blind from reading the exellent thread on what you need and don't need. Sounds like the PCV valve is one of the things to do around 60K miles.

    Thanks
    Dave

Buy new PCV and shake it. It rattles. If the old take-out does not make the same rattle, then you needed to change it.

60k intervals may be appropriate, or represent an abundance of caution. It's hard to predict for an individual car.

I looked at mine today. Moved the relay box ouuta the way. I didn't really see much as far as removing the wiper cowl. Some release clips but it still didn't want to move much. Tried to move the cabling going to the coils/plugs but there seemed to be something holding it in still. Took out some bolts and could finally see the pcv valve but really hated to go much further and end up destroying something just to replace the pcv. So as far as getting the cowl out, what all is there to take it out? Maybe if it's out I can get to the valve more from behind? Anyone with step by step let me know. Otherwise I'll just add it to the dealers list for my 100K mile maint. here in a few months.

    To remove the cowl:

    1. Remove the wiper arms
    2. There are two fasteners on either side of the cowl; remove
    3. Gently remove the rubber trim running along the cowl
    4. Remove the black plastic cowl pieces
    5. Remove the wiper motor assembly
    6. Remove the relay box mounted to the steel cowl
    7. Remove the steel cowl

    To remove PCV valve:

    8. Remove bolts holding engine wire harness to valve cover
    9. Remove PCV hoses
    10. Remove PCV valve

The photos show parts that must be removed to take out the cowl (ignore the spark igniters), a view of the PCV valve with wiring harness removed, and a view of the valve cover w/new PCV valve installed.

It's actually easier than it might at first seem...

Man, why did Toyota had to put it there on the Prius! On the '00 Camry it is a "no tools required" 2 minute job - just pull it up from the top of the valve cover by hand and put in the new one, again by hand (it fits snugly in a rubber insert)...

Hi Joe, if you need your Prius for the weekday commute, you might want to wait for the weekend so that you won't be rushed. It might take you 3 hours or so the first time, allowing plenty of time so you can remove the PCV hoses and clean them out (I used brake parts cleaner for that purpose), as well as to account for unanticipated difficulty like losing a bolt somewhere.

The windshield motor assembly mounts to the sheet metal cowl with 5 bolts IIRC. I had trouble getting one of the bolts to screw into the captive nut on the cowl, and had to use WD40 and gentle persuasion, etc. to get it to work.

Hi Kocho - well, you are no stranger to difficult Toyota repairs, like replacing the transaxle on your Camry and the exhaust system on your Prius!
