Having decided to go ahead and buy a Prius over a week ago, I'm now getting ready to just put it on hold.

I'd prefer Option #6 on a Touring but would be OK with a Base... but neither Carsdirect nor any local dealers can find one. Closest is 500+ miles away and dealer wants MSRP +500 for it, with another $900 to flatbed it to me.

That's the basic pricing from three different dealers, one in Ohio, two in North Carolina.

If I go with a different trim package (ie: not leater and Nav system) then they go below MSRP.

Local dealer says he'd do MSRP with a minimum 4 week wait and no guarantees.

Anyone in the North East having any better luck? I'm happy to travel to get one, but would prefer to keep it in CT/MA/NY.

At this rate I'm going to end up waiting for the 2008's and just order one from the factory at full MSRP from my local dealer.

    Wah!

I purchased a standard with package #6 (wife really wanted the Leather & I wanted the NAV system) on 6/21 from a Rochester dealer for $1,500 BELOW MSRP.

I was originally looking for the same thing (Touring with #6). Dealer showed me Toyota NE document that showed that they scheduled only 5% of production for Touring. He did find a Touring #6 at a dealer in Detroit, but he was not confident of being able of getting it at a reasonable price (it was Sunday so he couldn't check). Between the good deal that he was offering, having the car we wanted in stock (except it was not Touring) we took that deal.

Incidentally, they had 29 Prii in stock. The car that I purchased had originally gone to a dealer in Syracuse. I don't know why it ended up in Rocester.

I picked up my package # 2 in NY several weeks ago... but had to order it several weeks before that. There was a delay, and other dealers in my area were also having a hard time with the supply. I don't know if that's because of increased demand, the end of the model year, or both, but that's what I encountered last month.

I bought mine about 5-6 months ago from a place in Eastern PA and I got about 1,500 under invoice....they still had 1 or 2 on the lot a few weeks ago, but i know that they sold quick.

If you need the name let me know...didn't see your exact location.

Now that Toyota has exceeded their federal tax credit build quanitity, they should be offering them at or below MSRP. I see TV ads offering packages with "up to $1500 savings" but of course the dealer can ignore this and price it how he wants. make sure they have your phone number (they uisually get it first for their spam, I mean database). I'd walk. They might call you.

I gave up on a package 6 and then went looking for a package 5. No luck there either. So, I settled for a Package 4 and added a Garmin Nuvi. I love it! I got the Seaside Pearl and that was the 4th color of choice. However, now I'm glad a got the blue. What's the point? We'll get any Prius and you'll probably be happy.

are you a member of costco, sams, etc? in our area, we get costco pricing from certain dealers. when i was looking before i bought my prius this month, it was a few hundred under MSRP. you should also check with your employer re: benefits. we had a fleet deal with a different dealer thru my employer and ended up purchasing a little over invoice. i told the dealer what i wanted, put down a small deposit, they obtained the car from another dealer, and i had my car in about 2 weeks.

Feels like I'm spending all my time hunting for one :)

If I am willing to wait about 4 weeks most dealers "guarantee" they can get me one with colors/options I select.
Is that worth anything? They are large dealers, so I assume they can deliver but I've read a lot about people playing the "Just two more weeks, just two more weeks" game before.

Interested in your thoughts on it.

    Thanks again

Try the Costco auto program if you're a Costco member. It's a bit convoluted but they set the price at $500 over dealer invoice (wayyy below MSRP). You can't haggle down but the dealers are required by costco to lay out the itemized costs so you know exactly how much you're paying and why. That's how I obtained my 2007 package 2 in late May.

So it was treated as a normal dealer purchase but had a fixed price? That's certainly an option. We're not Costco members but do have a Sam's membership. Did you have a wait period? Were you able to be specific about options/colors?

I am STILL unable to find a bleeping car. Many many base/touring with packages up to 3, some base with 5, no Touring over 3 and no Base with 6. All four dealers I tried will not order a Touring with 6, stating that they can't get it in New England.

They will order a base with 6 for full MSRP and a 4 week wait or (In one case) he can get me a base with 6 now for $500 over MSRP + a flatbed charge to ship it here of $900.

    Bleh.

Taking our trade in car to Carmax tomorrow and once we have a value from them I might just fly to the midwest and drive one back. The idea of putting 1500 miles on a new car isn't appealing, though.

I AM being somewhat picky - Must be Op 6, prefer touring but would settle for base.. and really would like Mag Gray, Black, or Classic Silver. It seems like the dealers aren't that interested in what I would assume to be a quick sale.

For those of you that bought from Costco, did you order it special or do they basically find a local dealer with some stock and force a specific price? I'd happily buy a costco membership to do this. Have a Sams membership already but they clearly are just a referral source for dealers.

I commented that a local dealer sold us our Std Op 6 for $1,500 under list (and no dealer "packs") when you first posted. At that time they had 29 Prii in inventory. I just checked, and they are down to 10 - but that includes 3 Op6 (1 Seaside Pearl, 2 Barcolona Red). If you are so desperate for a car, I don't understand why you haven't checked further. After all, Rochester, NY is 323 miles away!

I'm sending a PM with details.

We ordered a 2007 Black Touring Package 2 and paid MSRP. Took 2 days to get it from another dealer. The other dealer had an adjusted market value sticker on it for $4,999 and said he still can't keep them in stock(Yep, that makes a pkg 2 $29,800). Our dealer said they are going to start with the adjusted prices this week.

Unfortunately (for you), the Prius is currently a very popular automobile and consequently is a seller's market at the moment. So don't be too surprised if dealers aren't willing to negotiate or "go the extra mile" to get just the car you want. Your options are a) to either settle for something other than what you really want, or B) be patient and wait until you find the car and deal that meets your requirements.

We are finally ready to buy a Prius. I took the advice of the forum about 10 days ago and requested quotes from carsdirect.com. I did not receive even one internet quote --just an e-mail from a dealer that we had gone to about 6 weeks ago stating that they were glad we were still interested. I telephoned the salesperson that showed us the Prius from that same dealership and we are going in on Thursday to possibly order one. It will be interesting to see what kind of a deal he will make us since the Prius' (Prii?) are more popular now than 6 weeks ago. We want standard with package 2, and would prefer leather, but it is not an absolute necessity. Any advice that you could give to us would be appreciated. I guess if we can't get a good deal there (only Toyota dealer in this small town), then we will go to Oklahoma City to one of the larger dealerships there to see how well we can do.

Last Saturday I picked up my new Touring w/Package 6 and got it for $2000 under sticker. The dealer had to look for almost 2 weeks to get it btu once they had it it was in and ready on less than 48 hours. The finance guy had no "deals" on financing so I wound up just buying it (I had a good trade-in as well.)

Good luck. So far, I am in love with this car. Its worth a bit of a wait IMHO.

I made a deal in early may for something between invoice and sticker. It took several weeks to get the car, and when it did arrive the manager told me that if I didn't make that deal several weeks earlier, he would be selling that car for roughly $3,000 more than I was paying. I'm not sure I buy that entirely, but it tells you something about how the market has changed as we get into summer.

It's strange to see people reporting small discounts from MSRP now given that a scant few months ago there was a virtual fire sale on them. In Feb I got 3k off MSRP on a 5 and I know that people in the following months were getting even more off because Toyota themselves were applying a 2k discount. I guess demand and supply caught up with each other again...?

Then again, I don't know what demand has been like in other parts of the country. :)

I bought mine at the begining of April, and the dealer had no interest in dealing. They pretty much had the attitude 'if you don't buy it, the next person in the door probably will'. I paid full MSRP
