Yes, if you go in reverse and away from your destination. :)

These are mainly for show, its a good marketing gimmick, the ones I see are painted with ads all over them and are mainly parked at special events and such. Kind of a waste to show it towing a mini bobcat that the prius could tow though lol.

I would expect to see a "classy" high priced truck like the CXT pulling an expen$ive competition Hydroplane boat on a trailer with chrome wheels, etc.
BTW, don't you love the "double steps" needed to get into the cab....

They look like they could be a great replacement, and the reputation of their mechanical quality is good from all that I hear.

Strictly speaking, no, because any distance traveled is a positive number, and any gas burned is also a positive number. But you could go from miles per gallon to gallons per mile.

Can we go back to that pink Hummer from last night, just for a second? There's one of those just down the street, but I've never spotted the driver. Now that I've seen her picture, I think I may take up evening walks. B)

I highly doubt that the Internationals would make a suitable Hummer replacement, simply because of their sheer size. Metinks that the replacement for the Hummer would probably be something with a lower cab height than those monstrosities.

From what I hear, the next Hummer replacement will be a vehicle designed to fit in the V-22 Osprey.

I actually know someone who has a similar vehicle. (not so showy, but the same basic idea) They use it tow their RV trailer. They are permanent RVer's, so this is basically a mobile house. They then use the beast for short trips around the area the trailer is currently residing, so they don't also have to drag along a car.

    Nooooo! Not the V-22!!!

I can only hope they choose a more stable aircraft; the V-22 (due to some aerodynamic issues having to do with the airflow from one set of rotor blades causing the other set to to stall) is not currently permitted to perform evasive maneuvers in combat, and can not be flown into higher-threat areas due to these and other issues (I hope I'm using the terminology correctly).

I'll be the first to admit that, "if it's not a Boeing, I'm not going"...but the V-22, as it sits currently, is a flawed design. Unless its issues are addressed successfully, I'd hope the military doesn't size upcoming vehicles to fit into it.

There's a story about Leno from a historic race a few years back (I can't remember the name at the moment but it'll come to me); seems one of his immaculately restored antiques broke down on, like, the first leg. Apparently, he threw a tantrum and castigated his mechanical entourage in public, for everyone to see...

This 'spare no expense' guy, having a tantrum 'cause all the money in the world still couldn't buy what he desired...

    Hmmmm...

He's a TV personality, after all...I think an slightly distended ego is actually a requirement before embarking on such a career.

    -------

It's weird, I think, how people have to possess things.

How it's not enough to know that they're out there somewhere...there's this desire to amass a collection of these things, and take care of the things we've amassed, and go to see our things in their specially designed storage area, and show our things to people (as a reflection of ourselves, of course), and treat ourselves to playing with our things whenever we want, knowing our things will be tended to by professionals so they'll be ready for me to use whenever I want...

...maybe I'm just jealous, but, I do not know...at some point, I have to ask myself, "why?"

My Dad used to say, "you know, you can only drive one car at a time."

Yes, Leno sees himself not as an owner but as a caretaker (which is important, actually, in the antique automobile realm)...but the flipside is that his 'caretaking' will now be part of the pedigree of each of those cars, for as long as they exist...so, in a sense, he gets a weird sort of immortality by being associated with them.

Call me skeptical, but I wonder if that's not one of the big reasons he's into his car collecting. Someday, some future collector will say, this International XL (or whatever it is) ginormous truck was part of the Leno collection...

...actually, I hope he's not like Bill Harrah, who neglected to provide for the survival of his collection after his death. Harrah's collection was sold off piecemeal, and some of the cars ended up with people who really didn't have the wherewithal to maintain their standard of living in the manner to which they were previously accustomed.

It's odd to store things which really are meant to be used, isn't it? I think it is.

There are a lot of replacements in the wings, but the Army is looking at something along the lines of the South African armored cars or maybe: Ultra AP

As long as they don't roll like the up armored HMMV and have AC I am good.

OH, is that what happened to them?

I went to see an antique car collection in Las Vegas years and years ago. All I remember is the hotel looked oriental. But could have been Harrahs. Might have been the coin collection that was in the Asian hotel.

Really too bad that collection is broken up and gone.

(I also went to the Liberace Museum. Small and cramped at the time but very impressive. I actually saw a piano once owned and played by Franz Liszt. It was beautiful.)

I'm sure Leno is making provisions for his collection. I'm sure before he dies there will be a museum constructed or he may be willing them to the Auto Museum that's already in L.A. *They* have an EV1 btw. Not working, but they have one.

The problem isn't one of possession, it's whether the things being possessed are man-made or natural.

Years ago, a strong storm blew through some small town in Michigan. There was a clip on the local news showing a large tree knocked down on some guy's old, immaculate Cadillac. The reporter asked the guy if he was upset about the car being damaged. The guy responded with, "Hell, that's just a car. How am I going to replace that tree?"

Likewise, there are something like only thirty original '62-'64 Ferrari GTOs, one of the more rare and desirable cars ever made. However, if someone really wants one (and they have the money), they can essentially build their own by modifying a much more common (for an old Ferrari) 250GT from the same time frame, which is what an old Ferrari GTO was based upon.

The point is, if it was man-made in the past, it can always be remade. There are places that are now making identical, turn-key replicas of 1957 Chevy convertibles. I even remember someone coming up with the bright idea of building a brand-new replica of the Titanic as a tourist attraction.

Something natural, on the other hand, is a one-of-a-kind item that can never be truly replicated, and then even an attempt to duplicate something natural could take much longer than the average human lives.

    Good for Jay.

As for the thing getting a review in a 4x4 magazine, that's absurd. What off road trails in the United States could that thing possibly navigate? It's too damn big. Get it in some mud and it would sink like a rock... then who or what could possibly pull you out???
