well not really gone, when u drive u hear a loud grinding upon moderate acceleration from the front right wheel, ( where the car got hit ) the slip indicator blinks a lot, any of you think the driveshaft is still good, i have the car sitting on jackstands in the garage, just wondering if wheel alignment issue could cause this ( i havent since it crashed )

The car was hit. It was in an accident? Do you have insurance? This sounds like it needs to go in for repair.

sounds like the cv axle is tore up. not a hard fix, at least on all the other cars i have seen, never tried to replace one on a prius.

oh yeah, it either slipped out or broke, not sure until i take it apart, its so humid here in fort myers. this explains everything, why i get that jet engine drone, and that LOUD rattle during regnerative braking.

heres a pic you can see it looked like it wrapped around the boot and decided to go bezerks. The parking mechanism wont engage, and as soon as i started the prius loud grinding from the right side ( which is the picture attached )

if anything else looks abnormal in the pic please alert me to that, like control arms and stuff becuase im not sure

owww. don't bother taking that apart, you need a driveshaft. the internal joint has let go.

there's some rust on the subframe member there. probably from the collision. everything else looks ok from what he can see.

Average CV complete axle with a core replacement is $140. They will probably not accept your core so it may be about$80-100 extra. The shop will charge about $450-500 to complete this repair. I highly recommend you buy a hayne's manual($17) and do it yourself if not stressed for time. Most I see is about 250 without core. You will need to take a better picture of the control arm area and check for cracks on the tranismission/synergy drive. With the tire attached to the prius....jack it up so the tire is off the ground about an inch and grab the tire on the left and right side and shake it left and right and see if there is any play. Do the same for up and down. This is a great indication of the bearing set on that wheel having damage or not. Have the alignment checked after CV axle replacement and adjusted(I am positive it will need it). The alignment will severely affect MPG's if it is out and grind up the tire really bad. Not so experienced people can change a CV axle in about 10 hours. 3 hours or less for experienced mechanics with the proper tools. Good luck. I sympathize with you as I also have a salvage vehicle. 05 Prius as well.

FYI- When you go to get a replacement, call it a CV Axle, not a driveshaft. The drive shaft is the piece that connects the transmission to the differential.

i just took out the hub the entire damn thing broke, like the driveshaft assy the cv joint broke, then the driveshaft right before the cv joint, thats why the entire boot was wrapped around, tommorow ill take it out for a final diagnosis.

make sure you've got some WS on hand, you might lose some when when you pull the axle out. get a couple of quarts just in case. the RH side is easier than the LH side, so that's a plus.

That "lot of stuff" is what makes the CV work... it needs to all
ride in a nice clean swill of grease, but I don't have to tell
you that by now. It would be cool if you could get better lighting
on the job and take more pix as you reassemble the new parts; I'm
not entirely clear on how the axles go into the transaxle case and
interact with the seals and actually stay in [other than happening
to be just the right length once the knuckle is back in place].

That right, for cars that have differentials. I embarrased myself a few days ago when I called and asked about a major service on my son's Toyota Corola. I asked if it included changing the oil in the differential.

I don't understand. Your Corolla has a differential. It's inside the transmission casing, but it's there just the same. It -could- have separate fluid, though I would expect it is the same fluid as the transmission (manual). I would expect it to be separate in an automatic (different fluid requirement).

With your speedo and slip indicator acting up it sounds like the wheel speed sensor is also broken.

i thinkthe slip sensor came on because the back wheels were on the ground while the front wasnt ( i had it on jackstands)
