Sun Shield for 2007 Prius

I think you'll have a hard time finding one to fit well. If it's long enough to fit the Prius' long windshield, it will probably be wider and the ends will hang down.

I took the same approach at first. Turned out to be penny-wise, dollar-foolish. See this thread for a description of a problem I had, possibly caused by a generic sunshade improperly placed.

If it fit it would work great. I got the smaller "car" size one that twist into a small circle at Target and I think I made a mistake. It won't stay put if I have the windows open (breezes blow it down) and sometimes it won't stay put when I have the windows shut. I think I should have gotten the bigger one for a truck or SUV because the Prius does have a giant front window. There is some wiggle room in putting the thing in, so even if it is too wide, I don't think it would be hard make it work.

The times the small one I have stays put it works great! I think I'll go back and get the bigger one. I especially like how it folds up out of the way and I can stick it between the car seat and the door....

As for the back window, I thought about that too but don't know how you'd get a sunshade to stay in unless it had suction cups. The rear window tinting that came on the 2007 seems to help. Let us know if you find one!

 

Is it really worth the $20 savings to have a sun shade that won't fit or protect as well as this: http://priuschat.com/shop/product_info.php...4/products_id/1?

As an added bonus, the sun shield on the link is made in the USA (instead of a Chinese sweatshop) and you'd be supporting the guy who runs this site!

If you do end up changing your mind and patronizing the PriusChat shop, just make sure you get the "Front" sun shield instead of the "Front Side" sun shield like I did! :lol:

 

Is the sunshade from the Priuschat made out of canvas?

since the company is canvasworks? and is the quality very good.

No, it is not made of canvas. I really don't know what the materials are, but it is rather substantial, mine has never fallen even without the visors to hold it up. It fits like a glove, and rolls up and has an attached velcro strap to keep it rolled up.

I can highly recommend it. You will never need another front shade for your Prius. B)

It has the typical aluminum foil-type face with a plastic back and fabric perimeter seam. I think it has a foam core. Very, very high quality -- much better than the universal sunshades you'll find at your local Wal-Mart, auto parts store, etc.

I'll second that it is a perfect fit. It wedges up under the visors securely enough that you don't really need to fold them down, though doing so provides added support. A great feature is that the sides of the shade are designed to cover the tiny glass panels on either side of the dash for a little added protection.

As some folks have pointed out, it is quite bulky even when rolled up -- a consequence of such a large windshield to cover. It's also a bit of a challenge to roll up; you need to roll it tightly so the velcro can wrap all the way around it. I usually drive solo, so I just toss the rolled-up shade onto the back seat. I've read others store it in the cargo area, behind the back seat.

Given a choice, I'd buy it again. That's how much I think the positives outweigh the negatives! B)

Okay, you sold me. I bought the front and rear one from PriusChat. That's a lot of money, but it's really hot here and I intend to keep my Prius until it no longer runs....

Ours is kind of a metalized surface facing out, and a whiteish plastic on the inside. Ours doesn't have the nifty little tiny side windows built in ... but heck, I don't think that much heat/light comes in through them anyway. They DO fit nice, and ARE worth the extra $$$. Good service too. Our 1st one started to unravel around a couple inches of the seam ... so the company sent us another! Again, great folks.

 

My local Toyota dealer has the Prius windshield shade for $24, but they're out right now. I plan to get one in the next few weeks. Anyone else have the dealer shade?

Approcimately 384 BTU/Hr flows through 1 square foot of glass of glass. i haven't measured the window yet but at a glance it is about a half a square foot. That makes about 192 BTU/HR. If it has any protective film you have to calculate what the percentage drop is of the film and calculate some efficiency factors. I just want to keep the heat down and keep as much direct sunlight off of the MFD. $30 is cheap compared to replacing a MFD or other electronic component that failed due to heat. Average electrical insulation starts to break down at 158 degrees F. If you put a digital thermometer in your car on a hot day and varied it with a sunshade on another similar day you would know that any sun shade is better than none. My .02 Not picking on anyone....just justifying a sunshade in my car.

Does Canvasworks still glue the velcro strap onto the shade? In seriously hot weather the strap on mine pulled loose. I replaced the shade with a rollup from a Toyota dealer which uses a stitched strap.

But if I were doing it again I'd get the foldup style. Over time both of the rollups started to sag, curl and generally not fit so good anymore; the pleats in the folding style should prevent that.

One Sunshade, for the windshield, will do most of the work. Park facing the Sun, or so that the car will be facing the Sun during the hottest part of the day, so that the Sunshield will do what you bought it to do.

I have the dealer sunshade and have not had any problems with it. It fits the windshield very well and keeps the car cool in the afternoon.

PS - I didn't know that one was available for the rear window. I'll have to look into that.

Sorry, this post was a mistake. My dealer doesn't carry a shade for the Prius, he tried to sell me a cheap generic one. I bought the one mentioned above for $30. Haven't needed it yet (we have covered parking at home) but will use it on vacation in August!
