Al Gore announces surprise Live Earth show in DC within earshot of denied venue
    By Associated Press

[Gore made reference to this event last night on Larry King]

Al Gore announced Friday a surprise Live Earth concert in Washington, foiling Senate Republicans who blocked Gore’s attempt to bring his global warming extravaganza to the grounds of the U.S. Capitol.
The former vice president said the all-day "Mother Earth" concert would be held on the National Mall at the National Museum of the American Indian _ about two blocks from the Capitol _ as part of Saturday’s concert series focused on climate change. The headliners are Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood.

"There is no more important matter before us than the question of how to live sustainable on the Earth," said Tim Johnson, acting director of the American Indian museum and a descendant of the Mohawk tribe.
There are eight other Live Earth concerts scheduled Saturday, starting in Australia and continuing to London, New Jersey, Japan, China, South Africa, Brazil and Germany.

Earlier this year, Republican leaders in the Senate refused Gore’s request to host one of the concerts on the Capitol grounds facing the Washington Monument. The denial came after Gore testified before House and Senate panels in March about what he calls a "true planetary emergency."

Gore said he was pleased that the concert would be audible at both the Capitol and the White House.
"A couple of the global warming deniers tried to deny it with parliamentary maneuvers," he said. "The cavalry didn’t come riding to the rescue; the American Indians did."

    Kumbaya!

I'm wondering just how many of those rock star performers jumped into their private jets so they could arrive at their performance site - to teach the world about global warming - and then jet back to their previous engagements.

I'd say there are more than one or two hypocrites preaching to the masses. <_<

    Oh lord, Kumbaya.

    There's a live webcast on liveearth.msn.com

I like the one at the Smithsonian in D.C. It's at the Native American Center. Gore is live at the Smithsonian.

I find it a bit ironic it's sponsored by Chevy: Do more, use less. with icons for fuel efficiency, E85 ethanol, hybrid, electric and fuel cell underneath. The other sponsors are Philips and ZUNE (LOL). I imagine it's a Podcast somewhere, not a Zunecast.

Lame neocon strategy #205: Belittle those trying to improve the general plight of the masses. Sad little people.

So what you are saying is that it never happened?
Really, you can't be THAT ignorant. [can you?]

So what are you really doing MJ?
Shooting the messenger who dares to point out the hypocrites?
    Defending the hypocrites because . . .?
Demonstrating your extreme level of bias?
    Proving your ignorance?

    Carbon footprint

The event was like holding "a hog roast to promote vegetarianism," a viewer of BBC Two’s flagship Newsnight programme had written at the show's website, London’s upmarket The Observer reported on 8 July.[7] It quoted bands including the Arctic Monkeys, The Who and Muse as dubbing the event "private jets for climate change." [21] Its total carbon footprint, including the artists and spectators' travel and energy consumption, was likely to have been at least 31,500 tonnes, according to John Buckley of Carbonfootprint.com - more than 3,000 times the average Briton's annual footprint, it added.

Organizers have defended some participants' use of jets by saying that the concerts will have eco-friendly electricity and sustainable lighting.

Eco-friendly electricity and sustainable lighting?   Oh yeah, that will help neutralize Madonna's carbon footprint of choice for attending this event. <_<

Watching the veteran star lap up the adoration, her entourage could, however, be forgiven for exchanging slightly jaded glances - having witnessed her jet in for the concert from New York.

So MarinJohn, are you also going to also ridicule the The Who, Arctic Monkeys, and Muse, for dubbing this event 'private jets for climate change' [ I like that  ]

Go ahead, continue your liberal idol worship ways.
Demonstrations of bias, ignorance, and hypocrisy become you. ;)

The event was held to get a message out. You don't get a message to a vast number of people by wispering behind your hand in a corner. Gore did a great job of getting the message out and the conservatives have a right to be pissed. But they don't have a reason.

It's a lot easier to be critical than it is to be constructive.

Al is looking less like a politician and more like a messiah these days. Al is the real deal. Conservatives are scared.

It was the first of a three year PR program.

And Conservatives did their best to try and subvert the event by denying them access to concert locations. But they found a venue anyway. I particularly enjoyed the Capitol building in the background of the DC event. I really liked the Smithsonian show. And how appropos that New Jersey has signed up with California and Hawaii re: Global Warming. A few more states and we won't need the Federal Government to legislate. We'll have done an end run.

It's times like these I'm sure the Conservatives are really unhappy about that 'free speech' part of the Constitution.

Saw them in Dallas last week. Two nights in a row.
They open every show with "Message in a Bottle".
Very appropriate song for Live Earth, I'd say.

(Stewart Copeland is simply amazing to watch)

That concert was incredible! A full day of bliss. They did a great job on the website too - you can find your favorite bands easily & see what didn't get broadcast.
