Warranty bs?

    I pick up my '07 on Fri or Sat. The dealer is telling me that, yes, I can wait till some time later (as long as it's before 36,000 miles) to purchase the extended platinum(6/100,000), but it'll cost roughly $500 more than the offer now of $1675. Toyota financial lists the cost at $1675 on the website, and says purchase of the warranty may take place anytime before 3/36,000.

    What's the story? Assuming I want a non-3rd party warranty, which I do, is this "extra $500 later" line bogus, to force me to buy it now?

    Yes, it's BS.

    Buy the Toyota 7 year/ 100k platinum here on PriusChat from Troy for $990, instead. I'm getting ready to.

    The search tool is a wonderful thing here on PC. Search warranty on PC & you'll find it for hundreds less. Take a copy of how much you saved back to the dealer and you can laugh real hard out loud at the guy ... if you're as shallow as me :p (just kidding ... but i do think that kind of junk up)

    Bogus.... and the price you're being quoted if you buy now is more than you actually need to pay anyway. There's a link on this site to an authorized source for the same extended warranty for under $1000.

    Yes, but my question is about the price difference depending on when I buy it, now or later. I'm only asking about a Toyota warranty, from Toyota, not 3rd party.

    We all are talking about a Toyota warranty, not a 3rd party. And it's still BS. If you got it now, or anytime before the 36K miles are up you'd pay the same amount (unless the cost of the warranty itself went up). This is the first time I've heard of a dealer telling someone they'd have to pay $500 more if they bought it later.

    I know hill is kidding, but if you do get it (or plan to get it) from Troy, please don't tell your dealer where you're getting it. It's one of the reasons we can get it for $990.

    That's a common scare tactic that dealerships use to put pressure on a person to purchase NOW. Often the poor buyer has "fear of loss (of the lower price)" and jumps on it.

    You were smart not to succumb. The warranty sold here by Troy is 100% the same warranty you would get thru that dealership.

    You can buy it for the SAME price at any time PRIOR to when your car reaches the 3 year/36k mile mark.

    My dealer tried the same thing when I bought my 2007 in May. He offered the 7yr/100k warranty for $1450 and said if I did not buy now the price will likely have a substantial increase in the coming months. Gave me some BS that Toyota was raising the price of all of their hybrid warranties. I said no thanks, and bought the same warranty for $990 from Troy.

    Dealers who do this infuriate me. It's complete BS. When I pick my car up if they pull this I'm inclined to have them put it in writing, sign it, and then send it into Toyota. My guess is that they would not put it in writing.

    I would have told them to stuff the car where the sun didn't shine and walked out, these people don't deserve your business, they deserve to be out of buisness, please call the toyota 1-800 number and your attorney general to report these deceptive business practices.

    I turned down the warranty at the dealership, then came here and didn't buy the one here either.

    I'm at 57k miles so far, no problems... another 43k and I can be pretty happy to still have my 1000 bucks in the bank... Any bets on if I'll make it? Isn't toyota supposed to be a good car?

    If by chance I need a repair that costs greater than $990 in the first 7 years/100k miles, I'll just offset it with all the money I saved by not buying extended warranties on my big screen TV, DVD player, PVR, digital cameras, and every other thing I've bought where they tried to sell me an extended warranty.

    Whenever an extended warranty is offered to you, just say no and put that money in a mutual fund instead. That way you will have money to cover you during the period when the items really are likely to break down, which is after the extended warranty runs out.

    I'm with you Marlin - I never, ever buy extended warranties of any type. So far I am way ahead of the crowd that always buys them. In fact, I can't think of a single time when I had a problem with a product and would have used an extended warranty!

    I will buy the warrenty just incase i want to sell to a private buyer that is a worry wart. I am hoping to buy a 100 mpg 09 prius.

    I don't buy these warrantees on anything but cars; on a car I generally take the view that I'd rather pay for it now and know that down the road if it breaks I don't care. It makes it a lot easier when bringing it to a place for service -- "Yeah, repair whatever you want, as long as it's covered".. if I did my own repairs I am positive I wouldn't buy one. If I actually would take that money and invest it I might do that... but I wouldn't. :)

    I've had them on my last two or three Chryslers and they generally pay for themselves. Maybe a Toyota wouldn't... we'll see.

    If the extended warranty is a good deal for the purchaser of the car, then you shouldn't buy that POS in the first place. I am expecting less maintenance and no repairs based on Toyota's rankings in CR and the experiences of taxi fleets.

    I suspect the shop will try to tell you that whatever breaks is specifically excluded from the warranty.

    Eh... "that POS" might be a car that is particularly appealing for other reasons and a person may have small concerns about reliability but a plan to not keep it beyond the warranty period. Frankly, I'd buy a Prius even if it did not have the near perfect reliability record - as would many many people here, since it didn't have as good of a record in previous years.

    It's great to be optimistic and expect no repairs. Hopefully that'll be what actually happens - and statistically the warranty must be a good deal for toyota or they wouldn't sell them at a favorable price. Am I willing to say that in years 4 5 6 and 7 I am sure I won't have a total of $900 in repairs? No. Am I willing to say that in those same years I would like to be able to take it to the dealer and not worry that they'll come up with "While doing your maintenance we found that You need to replace X, Y, and Z!"? Yes. I don't have the time to maintain my cars and am financially comfortable paying someone else to do it. I further enjoy the comfort of not feeling like the dealer is trying to rip me off by saying I need misc work done that's out of pocket. Call me cynical :)

    I am with you all the way Marlin. Here are some of my favorite extedned warrantee stories:

    1. The most outragious extended warrantee I was ever offered, you won't believe. I bought a Sauder media bookcase for CDs and DVDs for $49 at Office Depot. I almost fell through the floor when they asked me if I wanted to buy the extedned service plan for $9.95. I said "It's Particle Board!". They insisted it could break.

    2. I saw an open box Mitsubishi 65' big screen I wanted at The Good Guys but a couple of ladies were looking at it. I told the sales person if they didn't buy it, I would, and then I convinced the ladies why they should buy a different set. The sales guy said he would make me a great deal if I bought a service plan, but I couldn't get the deal if I didn't buy it. Since they allowed 30 day money back guaratee on everything including service contracts, I went ahead and took it with the plan to return the service plan in two weeks, which I did. That evening, the sales guy called our house and told my wife, "When do you want us to pick up the TV? The service contract was part of a package deal." I said no way, and I called the corporate office, I think that sales guy got in real big trouble.

    3. 1980, my freind and I went into another Good Guys to buy our first CD players, to see if we could get a better deal buying two at the same time. After telling us how wonderful and reliable the CD players were, he offered us an additional $10 off for buying two together. As soon as we agreed to the purchase, he made a complete U-Turn and started telling us how they break down all the time.

    4. The one time I did buy a service contract, it was a mistake. I was enticed by the clause that said if you had to have the same repair done more than twice, on the third time, you get a new replacement unit. Well it happened. Three times I took it in for not reading discs. On the third time, I was ready for my new unit, but I learned that the first time didn't count, becuase it was covered by the original manufacturer's warranty by one day. If only I had waited a couple extra days to take it in that time. Within one month, for a forth time, it would not read discs. Again, I went in expecting a new unit, but they said it had to go into the repair shop for them to confirm the problem was the same. There is sat for over a month, and I had to keep calling and complaining until finally, the said I could buy a new unit. This was two years later, so it was hard to find a DVD player for $450. I ended up buying a DVR, and turning in the receipt, because even the DVD recorders were only about $225 by that time.
