Before you decide who outgives, you have to determine - are you going per capita? sheer dollar amount? percentage of income?

The Christian countries tend to be wealthier. So if you go with sheer dollars, I am sure they will come out on top. But as a percentage of income...maybe not. It's more impressive to me (and to Jesus, too if you recall the story!) when a person who has $1 give 90 cents to the poor than when Bill Gates gives $10 million.

I don't dispute at all that the Christian churches/groups have been very generous. After all, it's one of the things they are SUPPOSED to do. But the generous ones seem to quietly plug along, doing their thing while the crazy hat people shout and scream about their "religion of love."

JESUS LOVES YOU! BUT IF YOU DON'T LOVE HIM BACK AND FOLLOW THE RULES AS I INTERPRET THEM, YOU'RE GOING TO HELL!!!!

Really...the guy outside the memorial union at Arizona State would shout crap like that all day long. He would call women whores for wearing shorts (hey, it's AZ...it was 90 degrees outside at 3 am this morning!) and he would shout rude things at everyone. All in the name of Jesus' love.

I was always more impressed by the Newman Center and Hillel, etc. who would go into the community and (quietly) do their work, setting an example to be proud of. You wouldn't know they did it if you didn't look for it - or if you received some of their assistance.

But Froley, you're missing the point. If a "Christian" blows up an abortion clinic, he's just a representative of a miniscule microcosm of Christianity and should in no way be considered to be representative of the whole of Christianity.

If a Muslim blows something up, it's proof that all Muslims are hellbent on the destruction of humanity.

Or that's what the radical fundamentalist Christians keep telling me anyway.

I think that would be a hard thing to quantify. We tend to look at giving in terms of total dollars, or total time invested, per capita, and we categorize certain things as charity that other cultures may not value. For instance, someone in the third world might think it is absolutely insane that we have charities to find homes for dogs when that person is suffering from malaria. So in terms of our wealth level, do we give more? Are we giving at the "widow's mite" level? Seems I heard a parable about that concept once ...

One thing we do know ... Christian culture is the richest culture. Individual wealth has soared among the Christian nations as individual liberty has risen. It would be a good thing for others to mimic our link to individual liberty and prosperity. It would be wonderful if the only thing we worried about for the world's poor was if they were too fat, like we do here in the US.

And Muslim activists disrupt world order. It is hard to understand why irate non religious folks always come up with the same old tired ideas. If a few are doing it, they are all doing it, and this is their religion. Actions of Christians, Muslims, etc are just that, actions of people. It is necessary to look deeper into what the religion teaches and what the reasons are that millions of very deep thinking, intelligent folks ARE religious.

On the bright side, a good friend of mine, a Wiccan priestess, delivered the invocation for one of the sessions of the Washington state House of Reps. It was well received.

It's best not to talk about religions that you are entirely ignorant of. Makes you look like more of a fool than you did before.

    Yeahbut...what about this guy?

Take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them; otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father. When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing, so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you. When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.

    Just sayin'.

And if one non-religious person stereotypes a religion, then obviously they ALL must, is that what you're saying?

    Well gods dammit!
I'm out of town and away from the computer for one weekend and miss this entire thread.

Anyway, I've always said that when you fight for prayer in school, you'd better be ready to hear other people's prayers. When you fight for the freedom of speech, you'd better be ready to hear what other people say. When you defend the freedom of the press, you'd better be willing to read what they print.

But as soon as you take one freedom from another American citizen, you'd better be prepared to lose your own.

Only a fool fights to revoke someone else's rights.

You're obvious erroneous statements regarding Wiccan beliefs make it quite obvious you know nothing about it. With that in place it isn't hard to determine that you also do not have a PhD in theology and are hardly an expert.

You can suggest anything you like. But a quick google search shows that if I were you I'd keep my mouth shut regarding Wicca rather than remove all doubt. Otherwise you're undermining your point.

Sheesh! How did I miss the "pagination" at the bottom ...

Barton is mentioned as a "Christian historian" ... yikes! I guess I'm a historian too, then. He's a pretty popular guy in certain circles, but as far as I know, his degree is in Christian Education or something like that, and he has not been trained in either law or history, both of which he pontificates about. His books are fairly well written, but he takes snippets from Supreme Court opinions and then presents them as what the court decided, rather than as opinions of that particular justice and his reasons for agreeing with the majority opinion. Barton is, I think, a "Christian Reconstructionist" and in my view shouldn't be consulted as representing the majority view of Christians in America.

I guess the media has to find someone to "balance" the Americans United for Separation of Church and State spokesman.

The quest for wisdom and spiritual growth is internal. Eastern philosophies work towards enlightenment. The individual seeks enlightenment through a lifetime of work on themselves. Unfortunately, christianity has always perverted this in to forcing your views on others. That is, if you become christian, then you're going to heaven and you don't have to work on yourself any longer; you have to work on others.

What a relief! I thought I was supposed to become like Christ.

You mean I can get into heaven without actually believing my beliefs? And that I can sit around measuring and judging others instead of changing my own life?

Kind of like the rabid non-Christians on this thread?

    What a miserable life!
