Power instead of Park?

I have done that a few time too without thinking, but the car is automatically placed in Park when you power it down, so no harm, no foul, and no potential for damage, assuming the car is stoped when you turn if off.

I suspect if you did hit power while moving, the computer keeps everything safe and free of damage too, but I am not going to try it anyway.

 

Powering down automatically puts the car in park. There is no problem with doing this technically.

There is one thing to keep in mind (like I did once).... You think you hit the power button (and you missed), then take your foot off the brake and go to remove the key or get out.... the car starts rolling when you think you turned it off.

I force myself to push the park button because all it takes is for this the happen one time with a kid in front of your car.....

Has not screwed up my 04 and I have been doing it since the first week of ownership. Why push two buttons when you can just push one and get the same result?

 

That auto-park, in fact, creates a problem for people wanting to
work on the car in a shop and then maybe push it out of the way with
wiring still torn apart. See the training slides for the trick to
prevent it in the NHW20 when needed.

The owner's manual specifically addresses this, and states that it's perfectly fine simply to press Power.

I've done that always. You're right--why would the car care?

Some people are OC, and must hit that Park button right before the Power button.

 

When you press the Power button from "D" mode, the "Park" button illuminates momentarily just before everything shuts down. And as mentioned, the manual specifically states this is okay.

The only time I press "Park" before shutting down is if I'm not getting out immediately, such as listening to a few more minutes of the ballgame on the radio, or maybe just taking a few moments to admire my Prius yet again.

One more reason to always set the parking brake before powering OFF.

 

Minor thing I notice with my 05 (not sure if this applies to other MY's), if I hit park then power, the windows are still powered for approx. 30 sec afterwards. If you just hit power, power is cut immediately.

The windows will remain powered for about 45 seconds after power button is pushed or until either front door is opened. See manual page 42. The park button is not envolved.

 

Nope. It's your workflow.

You probably hit power and then immediately open the door, and then realize you have to roll up the window. That won't work.

If you hit power to turn the car off, whether it's from drive or park, the windows are alive for 45 seconds or until you open a door. That's so you can roll them up.

Toyota has been doing this for years.

Absolutely right. When I screw up, I don't mess around. Hence the extra effort to add one more "THINK" step.

I'm almost certain that when I just hit the power button while gear is in D, I couldn't close the windows. I'll try it in a few minutes.

I confirm this is correct. I was closing the window in D gear. While pulling the switch up, I hit power, window stopped and everything shut down.

Tonight when I got home I stopped the car, pressed (Power), then tried the driver's window, and it went up and down. I didn't try hitting power while the window was in motion. BTW, mine is an '07.

I confirm that the same thing happens on my '05. However, like you, I've never tried it with the window in motion. I'll try it on my way home in a couple minutes.

EDIT: I confirmed that, on my '05, it doesn't matter what order you push the buttons OR if the window is in motion. Either way, you can continue to operate the window after you've turned off the power.

 

I never use my park button unless I want to keep the traction battery powering the radio, my windows always roll up after I park by pushing the power and yanking out my non rfdi key remote from the remote hole.
