Not since California wines handily defeated French wines in a French run blind taste test has the wine world experienced such earth shattering news.

    Chardonnay

    Year: 2005
    Award: Double Gold (98 Points)
Special Awards: Best Value, Best of California, Best of Class California State Appellation

    Couple of points:

    1. I don't understand why a wine that now costs $3.00 a bottle is still called "two buck chuck" and claims to sell for $2.

    2. I have to confess that I haven't tried the chardonnay, but the red that I did try was pretty bad.

I have drunk a lot of three dollar wines, and none of them are what I would choose. (And if you think I'm an expensive wine snob, what's usually on my table is a $5.00 Cotes du Rhone -- also from Trader Joe's.

Point 1 is the one that really got me wound up about this story -- when a guy is talking about selling his wine for $2 while the graphic clearly shows that the price is $3 -- what the heck is that?

It used to be on sale at Trader Joe's for $2.00

Did they bump up the price? I haven't bought a bottle in awhile (I don't care for it much as a drinking wine, but it's just fine for cooking applications) but the last time I did it was $2.

I know it's more than $2 outside California...

A brother/sis-in-law purchased this wine last week and said they really liked it. $1.99 at TJ in California.
According to the maker, Bronco Wines, it is more expensive the further out of California it is shipped . . . AKA "Three Buck Chuck" and "Four Buck Chuck." Pretty bad when shipping doubles the price.

FYI, it's $2.99 in Manhattan. I had perhaps mistakenly attributed that to Manhattan's high rent. Wonder what the price is in New Jersey or other New York City suburbs.

I guess if "many/most areas" means California, I would agree. It's clear to me that it can be bought in CA for $1.99, and almost half of Trader Joe's stores are in California.

    HOWEVER, from the thread starter:

    Chardonnay
    Winery: Charles Shaw Winery
    Year: 2005
    Award: Double Gold (98 Points)
Special Awards: Best Value, Best of California, Best of Class California State Appellation
    Price: $2.99

HOWEVER, on the official CA state fair website linked by the OP the price is listed as $2.99 -- information provided by the entrant.

Although I believe the folks who tell me the price is 1.99 at CA trader joe's, here in Tucson it costs 2.99, as it seems it does in the rest of the country.

It's not really important whether the price is $2 or $3, but when the guy says it's $3 when he enters it in the competition, and when the graphic on my screen says "Price $2.99" while he is telling me why he sells the wine for $2.00, it irritates me.

Not a big deal, but irritating. We all have things that don't really matter, but still get us wound up.

OTOH, I have marked the wine as one to try (which was the hope when the press release was generated) I don't drink much white wine, but it's usually a chardonnay.

While you're there at Trader Joe's, and if you prefer reds, I'd recommend the Two Buck Chuck Merlot, as opposed to the Cabernet Sauvignon or Beaujolais Nouveau (which is a little odd considering that back in the day when Charles Shaw was an independent vineyard/winery, it oftentimes produced the best Beaujolais Nouveau of the year).

We don't have a Trader Joe's in RI but a friend of mine from Boston gets it for me regularly (I may be a "wine snob", but I buy wine from TJs, especially when I am serving large quantities at a party). In MA, it's also "three buck Chuck".

So I finally got over to TJs a couple of days ago. I bought six bottles of my $5 Cotes du Rhone and a bottle of unvintaged Charles Shaw merlot, and a bottle of the award winning 2005 Charles Shaw Chardonnay. WRT the 3 Buck Chuck merlot -- my impression remains unchanged. It won't gag you, but I certainly wouldn't buy it.

WRT the Chardonnay -- well what can I say? It's very pleasant. It's good. As I mentioned, I don't drink a lot of white wine, but this is one I'll buy. Why am am writing this? Because a post on FHoP caused me to try a wine that I otherwise wouldn't have bought, and the result was excellent. I was definitely a skeptic about Charles Shaw wine based upon the red varieties I had tried, but this is a winner.

I was at Trader Joe's in Manhattan yesterday. They no longer carried the 2005, but had the 2006. Presumably, this is true or soon will be true throughout the country. I didn't pick up a bottle of the 2006 though because the line was too long.

I bought some at TJs on Friday. It was pretty good. A bit more sweet than I like but it also was not chilled. I'm used to drinking New Zealand Sauvignon blanc so this was different for sure.

For the price I'd buy it again but I'm no wine expert. ;)

I bought a case last week. I was in the store a couple of days ago but didn't notice if they had this. I guess I'd better go buy another case if they have it.

Right on. Its just grape juice fermented to create alcohol. :p

My GF is a wine drinker, but doesn't like 2buckchuck. Maybe I will get some of the Chardonnay and put it in a Fetzer bottle (her current cheap Chardonnay favorite) to see if she can tell the difference.

I'm more of a beer snob myself. :D

I picked up a couple of bottles of the 2006 a few days ago. IMO, it's not nearly as good as the CA State Fair award winning 2005. In fact, while the 2005 had served as my cheap white for the past year or so, I don't think I'll even buy another bottle of the 2006.
