Welcome to the site. The Prius will make a good first car in that it is very reliable, economic to operate, and will last a long time. The downside is that you won't get into the habit of checking things regularly or learn how to repair or replace stuff out of necessity. I am sure many of us had cars where we had to carry around oil, coolant, or power steering fluid for the weekly ritual of topping off.

 

Or the car that I added oil to every other day. That was fun.
Or duct taping pipes leaks....

I only wish my first car could have been a Prius! I think perhaps the only downside to owning a Prius for a first car would be that your friends (and fellow PC'ers here...) will become unexplicably envious of you...

Test drive lots of cars, but don't give your heart away to just any car!

 

I see the major downside of owning a Prius as a first car is that all other cars will seem priustoric... Imagine a car that burns gas when you stop. Or a car that can't keep you comfortable without burning petrol. Or a car that uses twice as much petrol as a Prius for the same trip.

If your first car is a Prius, you will always want an energy efficient, low-polluting car.

Get a Prius with the side curtain air bags! They make a HUGE difference in the side impact crash rating. It goes from poor to good.

A Prius would make an excellent first car. The only problem is that you'll be spoiled for anything else, and you won't appreciate how good it is in comparison.

 

A prius would make a great first car, and you'll never want an old-fashioned car. Insurance is expensive for first-time drivers, so shop around. I've been happy with Amica, but I don't think they would touch a first-time driver.

My annual quotes started at $2200 with one brand-name carrier else, then I found $1500 with someone else, then I was almost happy with $1070 from esurance. Amica gave me a slightly better policy for $765 (100k/300k liability, comp & collision, and I'm a single 27yo male in Orlando, FL with a clean 11-year driving record, car is garaged).
