I am contemplating having a Sirius satellite radio installed in my "satellite-capable" JBL audio system. Has anyone else had this done, and if so, are you happy with its performance? Did you buy the radio/antenna thru the Toyota dealer and have them install it? Or does anyone know if you can buy the same items from Circuit City or a Car Audio shop and have them install it a lot cheaper than the dealer? Does the fact that I have navigation matter in this.

Would appreciate hearing your experiences. Thanks.

    Hello

There are actually tons of posts about this topic on here, just do a search for sirius, bottom line I would say is don't waste your money at the dealer, you can buy it from Sirius prius or metro toyota I think the name is, all are listed on here when you search.

Some debate over the location of antenna, but I prefer roof, or you can put it under the sharkfin if you have one of those.

    Install job is easy.

    Good luck.

I had factory Sirius installed by the dealer when I bought my 07 Prius last month. Had them install it before I drove it off the lot. I did not specify where I wanted the antenna, and they installed in on the roof, behind the regular radio antenna. I was pleasantly surprised by this, as I had heard that dealers try to install it on the dashboard.

I have been pretty satisfied with it- I am very satisfied with the way it sounds, no complaints at all. It integrates into the radio/navigation system very well. On the negative side, I do get more dropouts than I did with my previous car, which had Sirius built-in at the factory (Dodge Durango). Any time I go through an overpass or an area with alot of trees, I get dropouts. My other car has factory built-in XM, and I hardly ever get any dropouts with it. It is aggravating, but its not bad enough to be a deal-breaker. I wonder if a better antenna would make a difference??

The thing that I absolutely hate is the 10 character text limit on the navigation screen. I HATE HATE HATE this with a passion. Just does not make sense why it has to be this way. Practically every song and artist is cut off. I guess it shouldn't be a huge deal, but it just drives me crazy. I could even live with a 16 character limit (which my XM radio has) because that's enough for most songs/artists, but 10 is not enouch......

So, bottom line, I am pretty happy with the Sirius in my Prius, EXCEPT for the character limit......

You may want to wait until after the merger with XM, I read yesterday that they proposed a lower priced plan for a la carte selection for you pick 50 channels and pay $6.95 mo. and additional channels are .25 cents a piece.

I had XM installed by the Dealer (lazy me). I get more "tree" drop outs and fewer "overpass" dropouts (makes little sense). Otherwise fidelity is great (and antenna is on the right dash).

Get full character printout. Believe this 10 character limit is a Sirius -- not a Toyota issue.

I just had sirius radio installed my my 2007 prius, and they glued the antenna right behind my other antenna. The antenna that they put on didn't get good reception at all. I had them move it to see if that helped, which it didn't, and removing it made 2 dents and a huge scratch. so I gave them my old antenna (wich is a high gain antenna and is magnetic) to put on my car. So after they put that antenna on I had great reception and it hardly ever cuts out unless its really heavily wooded or its a long bridge that I go under. But after all the times i went back, had my roof repainted and the dents pulled out, and my other antenna put on, i'd recomend just going with the portable one from circuit city.

    Good Luck

We bought our Sirius through the website and had it delivered, then took it to our dealership to have it installed. The antenna is up on the roof next to the radio antenna. It was a Toyota part, our dealer was just out of them (only had XM and we're Sirius people.) Dealership did a great job, and I don't think they charged us any more than a car audio place would have.
