Seller states that they got the stickers, then moved to Massachussets, where of course, the stickers are useless there. I was under the impression that the stickers are tied to the car's VIN. So that would imply that these stickers would be useless on some other Prius. Anyone who buys them is risking not only a carpool violation, but being out the $500 that the seller wants. Does the CA DMV have a policy on transferring stickers from one car to another?

    Correct.

Here is the California DMV site language on the issue:

That's correct, the stickers are non-transferrable from one car to another and are indeed tied to the vehicle's VIN. It's also interesting that he notes the stickers will add $3000 to your car's value according to KBB. Last I checked, HOV stickers was not one of the "extras" (like cd player, navi or leather) that can 'up' the value of your car on KBB.

Thanks for the sanity check. That pretty much confirmed what I knew to be true. Looks like the seller is engaging in a bit of fraud... At least no one has been suckered yet judging by the fact that there are 0 bids on the item and only a couple of days to go.

This guy has been a member of eBay since Sept. 2006 and has NO feedback? His rating is "0"?

Since when does someone join ebay and then buy or sell nothing for 10 months.

I've been a member of eBay for 7 years and I have 0 feedback as well. And in that 7 years, I've managed not to buy or sell anything. It can be done, but requires years of just ignoring that you have an account and not bothering to seriously bid on anything.

I originally got the account to bid on some animation laserdiscs, but got outbid. There hasn't been anything since then that I've been seriously interested in bidding on.

If you scroll to the bottom of any listing, you find a link to "report" it. Which is what I'm doing currently.

Same here. I've been an eBay member since 2001. I've made a few bids since then on a couple items, but always got outbid. It wasn't until just two weeks ago when I finally bought something and got my first feedback. What was the item that became my first eBay purchase? A cargo net for my new Prius. :D

LOL. I e-mailed the guy about how you can't transfer them from one car to another because they're tied to the VIN.

    Here's the reply I got:

"Im going to say this one more phreggin time. I got transferred to Mass and never used them. Buyem stickem on your car and ride alone, who the phreg is going to know!!!!!!!"

I sent this reply to eBay via their report button. I notice the auction still has no bids. And from the reply I got I also suspect the guy has been getting numerous e-mails telling him the stickers can't be transferred to another vehicle.

It will be fun to see what happens.

I just now looked at the listing.

I didn't realize that he listed his VIN in the posting. Oops. That could get him in trouble.

You could buy the stickers and then make a decal to match his VIN and place it over the VIN on your car in case you ever get pulled over. I don't see any potential issues with that plan. ;)

I emailed him as well about it, and got a similar type of reply. I also reported it to eBay as a fraudulent auction. I see the auction is still up, and that he still has no bids.

I wonder how many times he has attempted to sell the stickers...

I wonder why ebay allows such a clearly fraudulent auction to remain up. I'm curious how many times an auction has to be reported before they send a human operator in for a closer look. And a case like this is pretty cut and dry. The stickers are non-transferable - end of story.

Well, the listing is now invalid. I guess the guy can tell why eBay canceled his listing since he had so many e-mails telling him the stickers aren't transferrable.

I reported a fraudulent item once a couple of years ago. When you report it, you should get an automated reply which says they will investigate and reply within 48 hours. I got a follow up after the item was removed thanking me for helping and participating in the "Ebay community". So, it just takes them some time to investigate and make sure the item violates the rules.
