I have a lot of conflicted feelings about it.
I'm pissed that I can't use Bonds as a 'perfect roll model' for my kids as they look for a baseball hero.
I'm pissed that a tainted player beat someone as great as Aaron.
I'm thrilled at Bonds' athletecism and that such a storied record has been broken.
I'm thrilled that the chatter about it on all the sports shows will finally start to simmer down...not right away, but over the next week or so anyway.
I did make it a point to stay up and tune in to watch it for the last 4 days.

I don't acknowledge that that roid abuser beat Hammerin' Hank.

    I do not acknowledge it.

    I do not.

    My Barry Bonds story:

Back when I worked for Yahoo!, our softball team had a game against arch-rivals Excite. Excite hired Barry Bonds as a ringer. The pitcher, a then 25-year-old woman, struck him out. Booya!

 Kinda like OJ, Bonds, "not enough evidence", "juiced" that one out of the park. Not a record in my book!

I am conflicted too. He is a gifted player. Hitting a baseball is about so much more than power. But you don't see little guys hit 70+ HRs a year.

Baseball was my favorite game to follow, watch, and play when I was a kid. After MLB's strike in 1994, I went on strike and refused to watch it anymore. Until the HR battle between McGwire and Sosa. I was fixated on every game as McGwire approached and passed 61. I still have images in my mind of the line drive that would be #62 barely making it over the left field fence and McGwire's victorious trot around the bases. And I was like a kid again.

I had no interest in last night's game.

First Baroids Bonds: The nightmare is over.

I was praying for a career ending injury for years - to no avail. I did not watch the game, I have not watched one of his games since he left Pittsburgh - or since he started juicing. It is a GREAT SHAME and an INDICTMENT on our society that we stood pat while what I consider the greatest sports record was broken by a cheater. I cannot understand how people dont call him what he is, a cheater. His athleticism? Sure, Ben Johnson was a great athlete too - what he [baroids] did statistically during the tail end of his career has NEVER been accomplished - is that athleticism or is that cheating - you celebrate that? It is my hope of hope that:

    1. Mr. Bonds is indicted by the Feds - that Mr. Anderson starts to talk when jail time becomes too much for him (I wonder how much Baroids is paying him?) - that the truth comes out.
    2. He is NOT elected to the HOF
    3. He has an asterisk beside his name forever.
    4. He offers a formal apology to baseball fans and becomes a poster child for kids not to juice.

    Second, OJ Simpson:
    1. I wonder how you feel about him my good doctor.

And probably 25-70% of all players of Bond's era were juiced by obviously broad estimates. If the majority of the pitchers he hit against were juiced would that make the record more valid? What about the games he played in? If you don't acknowledge the record (let's say I'm giving you the power) and you going to go back and remove all the runs and rbis he was responsible for in all the games he played in and retroactively change that history too? What if some of those runs were in games against other known juicers...Sosa, McQuire, etc?

I absolutely hate to see someone like Bonds be the one to take ther record from Hank...I hate it. But the fact of the matter is that despite all the subjective evidence against him there is no objective evidence. He is still legally playing the game and the record is his.

Maybe, someday in the future, some clear evidence like medical records, photos, confessions of his providers, retroactive tests...I don't know...will be able to show that he clearly cheated and the Mitchell commission will retroactively revoke a bunch of his runs and he will become just a footnote in the record books. But I think the record will stand, history will come to accept it.

The savior of all this will be, I sincerely hope, that Arod will blow the record out of the water in a few more years and all this hoopla will be water under the bridge.

I agree with what you are saying. I would, if i could, make Hank Aaron the official HR record holder while acknowledging that steroids do make superior athletes potentially superhuman.

And I hope A Rod cracks his record wide open. I cant wait to hear and see Baroids congratulate him on that record breaker.

Mark McGwire: Lives just a couple miles down the road from us & he keeps a low profile. He was a nice guy who gave great interviews, and he knew when do disappear. He too, will likely never be a hall of fame-er. Rightly so IMO.

Unless the Mitchell commission clearly and unequivocably convicts/condemns/punishes Bonds he's a 1st ballot HOFer, no doubt about that. There'll be some protest votes, of course, but a lot of this furor will have died down by the time he's eligible, the records he's broken and the stats he's put up clearly make him HOF material.

McQuire was an idiot with the statments he made to congress...probably ruined his shot at the HOF with it...but he may, yet, squeak in on his 3rd ballot.

What does OJ have to do with this. Would you be making this statement if Barry Bonds was a white man?

Thinking about some of the old timers. Had they been available; I imagine that Babe Ruth would have been the first in line for his Roid enhancement. I don't think today's players are that much different. They just have different opportunities both good and bad.

i believe the reference was made towards available evidence. there is no evidence that baroids took steroids - although he is the first human being ever to hit the way he hit from ages 35-40 years - something pretty fishy there.

OJ - a jury of his peers found him innocent of murder although a similar jury of his peers found him guilty in the civil proceedings of the same crime - again most humans believe he did it - although there is no direct evidence he did it.

nothing racial - both guilty as charged - would be the same if they were white, black, brown or green.

On a side note, did anybody notice the unbelieveable crap that went on in the stands? Anybody notice the guy in the orabge jacket? I'm hoping that somebody prosecutes him for assault, because that was simply unacceptable behavior.

That ball is probably worth $1/2 million and a lot of publicity. That kind of behavior is destine to occur. But yea, it's stupid.

I can't say whether BB was on steroids or not, but his physique hasn't changed to my eye now that the roid controversy has been daylighted. The guy is huge. I have to wonder how his 'been walked' record is compared to others, since most pitchers won't give him a chance and just throw wild pitches to walk him. He has made his record hitting pitches most others would just let go by.

First of all, the term "Guilty" applies only to criminal actions, not civil litigation. One is found "Liable" when he or she is successfully sued for damages.

Secondly, the standard of proof in a civil trial, preponderance of the evidence, is way lower than the proof beyond a reasonable doubt standard which must be overcome before someone is convicted of a crime.

Lastly, if you want to use a non racially charged example of someone who was acquitted of murder in the criminal trial but was subsequently found liable for wrongful death just used Robert Blake.

Innocent until proven guilty, unless found guilty by the public court.

That is one of the things wrong with this society today. And while the evidence is quite compelling as to Mister Bonds having indulged in steroids, nothing has of yet been proven.

It's something. We will all hang him, when he is just guilty of being a sour puss when it comes to dealing with the media, and some fans.

Anyway, in a few years Arod will come along and break it, baring any career ending injury, and hopefully that will be that.
