Does your battery discharge when you're in park?

I noticed something this summer that I don't remember seeing before. I noticed if I'm waiting for someone or at a drive-through if my car is left in Park for a period of time I lose battery power pretty quickly. I can't recall this happening before.

The HV battery runs the AC compressor, and also powers all the 12 volt systems through the DC to DC converter. Depending on how much stuff you use, the battery may draw down pretty quickly.

I was aware of that, but this is happening no matter what. The A/C pump doesn't need to be on to cause this. Like in the drive through example, the radio is off as well.

Your battery may not be as high of an SOC as you observed in previous times. Since it is summer, the battery is likely to be hot. The battery won't be able to regen as much compared to regen in cooler temperatures. Also of note is that each bar of SOC isn't equal value, so if you begin parking at a lower SOC, then it may seem your electrical consumption is more rapid depending the range of SOC that each bar contains.

Yes, if you have ANYTHING running in the summer and sit in park in the heat, it will use up battery power. Period. Gas engine will kick in as needed, but make tour 5 minute mileage suck. I drive with my lowbeams on all the time for safety (trauma nurse, you know), but will often turn them and the AC off when I sit. Can't turn off my iPod though.... I don't think you're experiencing anything unusual. Just heat and battery drain for te things you love.

Aren't the headlights still on while you're sitting there in park? They would drain your battery too, I'd think.

The battery will drain down when you're in Park. If you're in "ready" mode it will also charge back up using the ICE if it needs to. Nothing to worry about. Let the car do it's thing.

Mine behaves the same way most of the time. When I go to start the car in the morning the battery level is, or following 30 seconds of driving becomes, 1 bar lower.

Prius in 'Ready' takes a few hundred watts for internal metabolism. With all lights and accessories off, I believe the largest load is the inverter coolant pump. Always running, and that's the way we want it :)
