I'm new to this posting site and I hope someone can HELP !

I bought a 2004 Prius that was in a front end collision. All body work was repaired and it looks good. But no one can get it to run. It was taken to 3 different dealers and no one will touch it because it is listed as salvage. I can't find any independent mechanics who are familiar with the Prius. Is it possible there is an automatic shut-off switch that was tripped upon impact in the accident that needs to be reset?

I live in Van Nuys, California (Los Angeles area), and I need to find experienced Prius owners and mechanics in my area that can give it a once over to mechanically evaluate why it won't start. The auto body guy told me they were once able to start it but as soon as it was put into gear it would die. No one has since been unable to start it.

Please help suggest, direct or advise me what to do and who I can connect with in my area. I am desperate and frustrated !!!

    Thank you.

Keyes Collision Center on Oxnard is a Prius certified shop. Give them a call (818-780-2000), they may be able to help you.

what side? left? right? check engine lights? any lights? any response at all upon trying to start? there is a collision sensor right next to the inverter that might have been tripped.

Thanks for your response. I am located in the San Fernando Valley, Van Nuys area of Los Angeles, California. It is a 2004 Prius. I'm not sure of the package. How do I determine?

The collision was straight on in the front. Everything has been repaired and all engine parts were replaced that were damaged, but the body guy doesn't know anything about the mechanics of the Prius. There are no lights on the dash, engine, headlights,.. nothing. No response at all inserting the key and pressing the start. I don't have a manual .. where is the inverter and what does it look like? Is the collision sensor a toggle switch? Is it anywhere near the fuse box? Could it be a simple fuse issue?

Could it be a simple 12volt issue? I.E. is the little battery dead?

Put a motorcycle battery charger on the 12 V battery and let it charge for a few hours at less than 2 amps. Anything more will cause damage to the 12 V battery. You can charge/jump from under the hood on the right side there is a large black plastic cover for the batt conn. I agree with the charging thing. The HV battery has a fuse at the connector for the HV batt. under the back hatch area but i would not mess with that until you charge the 12 V battery. The actual 12 V batt is in the passenger side rear hatch area. Do you have a multimeter to measure the voltage?

If your husband were in the Los Angeles area I would like him to work on my car. If his employer doesn't welcome him back from medical leave, he will be in high demand as an independent mechanic.

sorry, we're on the other coast! sounds like we would do much better independently on your end of the country.

if there's no response at all that could be simple as the 12v battery. first check the connections at the battery in the hatch (passenger side). you can try charging it as listed above, or try to jump it. just make sure the jump is done correctly- reversing polarity can do major damage. good luck!

Thanks for your response. What is special about a motorcycle battery charger? Won't any battery charger work? I don't have a multimeter to measure the voltage. I have an old Power House battery charger made in USA, model PH2 with an output of 2 AMP for a 6-12 Volts. It also has stamped on it ".5 AMP 117 V.AC 60 Cycles. Will that work? How will I know when it has maximum charge without damaging it? I can't open the back hatch to get to the battery because the unlock function on the key won't work without power. Is there a manual override to open the hatch door when there is no power?

Okay, duplicate post. Having some problems with PriusChat right now.

For the access to the batteries, for now you'd probably have to fold down the rear seats, crawl in there, and lift the battery hatch panel out. The trunk hatch lifts out too, if you need to get to the spare tire or HV batteries. Not sure if there is a manual override, but I would think you could put a screwdriver in the hatch lift mechanism from the inside and release it.

This seems kind of obvious, but the high-voltage battery has an inertia switch like the air-bags, to shut off the voltage in case of an accident (as has been mentioned a couple times in response to worries about people cutting into the car to free someone after an accident). I'm not sure if these things auto-reset, but it would be worth checking.

Tried to call you 3 times. 2 times I got a fax and one time I got an answering machine that barely let me give you my name before it shut off. If you read this before 7pm your time please don't call me back after 11pm eastern time.(maybe 7pm your time)

pop open the hood, open up the left side fuse box and there is a red cover that you can flip open for a jump, the positive wire from your jump source goes to this terminal and you can find any good clean part of the car or engine for the ground cable. then if the problem is the 12 volt battery the car should start right up, if the car does not start you can at pop open the hatch and take a look at the orange connecter that disables the high voltage battery. hope this helps you keep us posted.
I wish you were in the north east so I could take a look at the car myself. it could be something as small as just clearing the codes in the computer. some codes will prevent the car from starting.
    good luck
