Ok.. so it finally happened. I never quite understood esp. since I've left the maplight on (driver's side) before overnight and the battery didn't die. This time, my bro left the passenger side on (he was cleaning the interior of the car) and the poor car was beeping trying to get my attention. Curiosity got the better of me and I went downstairs to find out what the beeping noise is. To my shock, it was coming from my Prius (Totoro!)!! The lights were barely blinking and the interior alarm light was blinking and the "Taillight On" symbol was blinking with the exterior lights too.

I tried to start the car and I only got a few warning lights (mostly the Red Triangle of death and the CEL) nothing else was lit.

After a few tries cycling, the dashboard lights no longer illuminate and only the power button light cycles (from ACC to IG-ON to OFF even though my foot's on the brake pedal).

    Crap....

    Update:

Alright, so I finally found the reason why the battery drained so quickly and while the maplight may have played a role, it wasn't the main reason. The main reason was the headlights! My bro said he exited the passenger side (uh oh!) and he didn't know that the headlights shut off only when the driver's side door opened (He thought it was like the Camry where it'll shut off after 30 secs after the car is locked).

However, it's nice of the car to start beeping (don't know if it's a by-product of a low battery that sets the alarm off) to tell you it needs help!

Update: Tried it again and the battery musted up enough juice to start the car.

All (seems) fine now after a 10 mins drive...

Ok. . so how do you handle this problem? I know jumping the car can be a bit tricky, but it can't be that bad, can it?

well last time it happened, I called Roadside Assistance so that was fine. I've actually never jumped a car (since I never had a car with an old battery)

    Welcome to the club ;)
For me it was leaving the doors open for a couple of hours - the puddle lights did it
Why are there no timeout timers to protect the poor thing?
    Like the name totoro :)

Yikes! Well more reason for me to buy the LED replacement bulbs for all my interior lights... maybe exterior markers too.

lol.. this is actually the second time my battery went dead...

The dome lights I know automatically shut off after a while (20 mins i think). But the maplights don't.

A 10 min drive is not enough to properly charge the 12 vdc battery. Please consider using an automatic battery charger to fully charge the battery. The attached tsb provides instructions

With the Prius, once you get it in "ready" mode you can leave the car on for a while without driving it to charge the battery. The inverter will charge the battery from the traction battery and fire up the ICE to charge the traction battery if required. Do not do this in a closed garage. The Prius 12 volt battery isn't a starter battery so it needs to be charged slow as it isn't designed for fast charge/discharge.
Prius is easy to jump-start, just hook up jumper cables as normal and switch on with the assisting cars engine turned off.

Do not jump start another car with your Prius, you can however charge the battery of another car enough to start it by connecting jumper cables with both cars off, then turn on the Prius and wait a while, maybe 20 minutes to allow the Prius inverter to charge the other battery. Now turn off the Prius and disconnect the cables then start the other, inferior car.

cool thanks. I don't have an automatic battery charger though (since I never expect a 12V battery to die as we've never had any old cars or at least old 12V batteries)

Toyota recommends a 10 amp setting to charge the 12 vdc battery.

The first winter I had my Prius, driving in Winnipeg city traffic at -40 C with the electric rear defrost on constantly, and headlights on all the time (Lovely dark winter days), my 12 vdc battery started to experience problems. I first noticed this when the coolant transfer pump started to moan in the heated underground parking, and the auto headlights went very dim, when I poked the power button.

I picked up some older model VDC Electronics Battery Minder units at an auction place. I directly connected the charge harness to the 12 vdc battery and left the unit plugged in whenever I wasn't driving the car. That made a big difference, I barely hear the coolant transfer pump cycle, and when the auto headlights turn on they're nice and bright.

The stepped/fixed charge rate to the 12 vdc battery will cause problems as the fleet ages. Some users have already noted the 12 vdc battery starting to bulge, while others have noted lack of capacity / dead / hard to charge. Once a battery becomes chronically undercharged, it will rapidly sulfate and suffer an early death.

OK I gotta ask. I know it's possible but how did the lights get turned on with no-one in the driver's seat? The story's got to have an interesting twist.

Yeah, it won't happen in the US cause you don't have AUTO headlights.

When you go into IG-ON, the headlights come on when you're in AUTO (or headlight on for that matter). With the Prius, Toyota cut corners and linked the auto-off feature with the driver's door rather than with a timer (like other Toyota cars). This means if you exit through the passenger side door, the lights will remain on.
