    Correct.

This is the full image of the bottom center, which provides essential detail not easily discerned in the thumbnail.

That's the ruins at Pompeii, Italy. Obviously, Volcano and the vertical would be Monument to match the pyramids.

Yeah, and unfortunately it is also a location which had already been played. <_<

I guess the world really is getting smaller. We are running out of places to post.
But since it is part of a larger puzzle, I guess it's OK. ;)

When I was putting this together I very seriously considered making every image a location that had already been used in the game, to add sort of an additional level of "scavenger hunt" to it but mostly to help keep the difficulty at a something less than impossible. However, meshing eight simultaneous themes proved so difficult in itself that I ultimately and gratefully seized the nine landscapes I finally was able to get "meshed", so to speak, and any prior usage would just have to "come with the territory".

Here's the full size Center Left image (I left an exceptionally prominent landmark visible to aid its identification):

    [attachmentid=10881]

And here is the full size (and instantly recognizable I think) Center Right

I'm new to this game, but the center right image is Navy Pier in Chicago.

Correct - but in the context of the Pic Tac Toe game, it'd more accurate to say that the Navy Pier is in the image, not the image itself, which is a much greater area (and deliberately so). Which of the eight themes does the image represent?

Meanwhile, here is the full size Top Right:

    [attachmentid=10888]

And full size Center: (the "Monument" is located about halfway between the top edge and dead center)

Given the extraordinarily low rate of response to this Pic Tac Toe, I suggest it become a "background" game for those who want to pursue it, and that the regular game resume.

So saying, the field is open ----

I think that's a good idea...clearly the level of work required to create it is high and the level of work to solve it is as well. Individual images are things that a few people who have ideas or interest in can pursue...but I look at the big 9 image thing and just think....not worth the effort..some are obvious, so I don't want to waste time with those, some are totally obscure...so I don't want to waste time with those.

I don't have an image ready or would post up...maybe later if no one else jumps at the chance.

Sorry. It was a good idea, and I was following, but you don't really want to get competitive with levels of difficulty, do you? Nine obscure images with three somehow-related but not-at-all-obvious themes could become impossible in very short order. If you'd like some harder single images, just ask. :)

    I think it's fascinating! And I think I found a few...

    upper right - Dubai http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&...p;z=11&om=1

bottom right - Kona airport, HI http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&...p;z=14&om=1

center - Lake Havasu City (is the monument London Bridge?) - http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&...p;z=13&om=1

ooh! bottom left is Hilo, HI http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&...p;z=13&om=1

and I think I just found the last unidentified one - left center is Mackinac Island http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&...c=addr&om=1

Give me a moment to find something new.

Found it. Well worth the visit!

DING DING DING!!!! Excellent!!! But can you arrange the eight themes correctly?

Yes, London Bridge is the "monument", and the funny anecdote is that when London put the bridge up for sale, the Lake Havasu developers bought it without asking any questions, thinking it'd be a terrific tourist attraction for their new city. The trouble was that they, like most uninformed US citizens, thought they were buying the Tower Bridge!!! The deal was sealed and the stones delivered before they realized their mistake!

Well, I'm gratified the Pic Tac Toe wasn't a total bust. But if we do any more we better do 'em in their own thread.

This is the USAF Museum at Wright Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio.

    Google image

It has been years since I have been there. There used to be an F-4D in the front that I had flown in the 80's.

Here is my entry. This is a beautiful dormant volcano near a major city. I stayed in a hotel that the balcony opened up to a view of the peak. The top is well over 10,000'. My son owns property on the NW slope.

    Volcán Tajumulco
    Near San Marcos, Guatamala

I've got a couple good ones saved at home...I'm working the night shift. If I don't post up by 8am central time I forgot and am sleeping and someone should take my spot...I'll trade back later.

Crap, 3rd edit...I think I'm a bit off...Google Maps doesn't have good maps of this area so the city names aren't marked. Looks like it must actually be Acatenango near the old city of Antigua. Hope that's right.

You are correct except that it is Vulcan de Agua (water volcano) and sits due south of Antigua.

Yes; I got the themes in order first; then I knew what sort of stuff to search for ;) I would have never managed it otherwise. Of course, your hints, and a couple of other poster's discoveries helped a lot!
