. . . when you stand in front of the security door at work with your badge in your pocket waiting for the SKS to unlock the door.

For the first week after I brought home my Prius (and sometimes even now, several months later), I got really pissed off at my house door for not unlocking itself when I got home. Stand at the front door, fishing keys out of my pocket, grumbling.

And then there's the fact that nobody -- not even the sharp-eared parrot -- hears me drive up anymore, so I don't get my customary Welcome Home greetings. Nobody cares anymore, sigh....

Mine was when I parked Sweetie's car and then went looking for the Power button to turn it off. There were several seconds of "I know I'm supposed to do something but what?".

. . . when you are riding your bicycle down hill, and you feather the brakes to increase the energy regeneration to the batter . . . oops . . . no battery.

At first, I kept bumping into my apartment door, expecting it to unlock when I touched the doorknob. Now, 3 1/2 years later, my primary car is the Zap Xebra, and I keep forgetting that I have to take the key out of my pocket and put it in the slot and turn it. At least, with the Xebra, there's no engine to start, ever.

My lucky husband, who gets to drive the Menace, now remarks at how "barbaric" it is to have to actually stick the key in the ignition in my car.

He's got a point, but I remind him that my driver's seat automatically adjusts to me when I get in, and the Pri seat doesn't. I guess that makes us even, at least for now.

I haven't stood at the door to my office waiting for the door to unlock and open without me using my security badge, yet- but I'm blonde, so I'm sure that will come at some time.

When I first got the Prius it was the door at work for me. I must have smacked into it every morning for a week expecting it to unlock when I touched the handle.

And, when I keep hitting the dash of a regular car expecting to find a Power button (last Christmas my mom asked me, "What are you doing?" as I kept hitting the dash. I turned to her and said, "Oh, I have to use a key?!), and then when I stop the car, I press the dash for the Park button. Oooohhh, how I hate to drive regular cars! I need to psych myself up for driving one this weekend.

When you get in your other car (other than a Prius) and sit for a second or two, thinking what you should be doing next....ahhhh yes....put the key in and TURN it.

I drive a conventional car for work so and don't have the SKS. However I forgot to put my helmet on before my gloves this morning when I went to ride my motorbike to work for a change. I hardly ever ride it now, the car is cheaper to run!!! (it did feel good on the bike but not in the same way as the Prius feels good.

Me too! Only, for me, the Prius has become a "regular" car because it burns gasoline. Conventional gas cars annoy me because they continue to run the engine at stoplights. The Prius annoys me now because it runs the gas engine (most of the time) when it's moving. A sensible car would not run the engine at all, unless you had to drive more than 50 or 60 miles! (The Xebra, being a baby electric car, only goes 45 miles, but 27 days out of 30 that's enough.) There's no longer any excuse for cars to burn gas for around-town driving.

I sure wish I could afford one to do my short errands! They're killing my mileage, especially since we've had such horrible weather lately and the AC is ALWAYS on!!!

...when you pat the roof of the car a couple of times, or stroke it like a cat, hoping people will be foolish enough to think that unlocks the car.

I did it yesterday!!! I drove my work car a few hundred metres then poked my finger at the dash and got all confused when nothing happened!!

I was distracted by a shiny red Ford Focus Diesel the fleet guys were checking out. I was distracted by the styling cues it took from the Prius.

I kinda had this happen today. I took my wife's Camry (non-hybrid) over to the carwash, and when I got in, I was pushing on the brakes and looking for the power button. Once I realized: Oh, yeah, insert the key and turn it!, I then was reaching for the emergency brake pedal (nonexistent on the Camry; it's a lever on the center console) and reaching for the shift lever on the dash (again nonexistent, of course) before finding it on the center console.

Once I was driving, everything felt wrong: the gas was too twitchy and the brake pedal travel more than I expected at first. Darn those nonregenerative brakes!

A few more years in the Prius and I'll not remember how to drive a normal car ever again. I think I have to buy my wife a Prius just so I can take care of her car more easily!
