I have 2 dogs each about 30lbs and I take them to the dog beach or dog parks like twice a month...now I just got a prius and I was wondering if you use anything to put down as liner to reduce the dogs "ruin" the carpets to the minimum...if so what products do you use and where did you get them? appreciate your help. thank you

I took some builder-grade carpet remnants and cut them to fit in the back. Seems to be fine with the dog! (and works for anything else I happen to put in there). No need to spend a lot of money.... Of course it won't protect against a spill, but you could always cut a small tarp to fit under the carpet - you can get those at Harbor Freight for just a few dollars.

On a related topic: Has anybody found a good barrier system to keep a dog from moving from the back to the front seats (excluding the use of a crate for the dog). And yes, I know that the dog would be safer and more contained in the kennel/crate.

1)a typical barrier won't fit if it's supposed to brace against the ceiling b/c the back of the seats is further back than the hinge for the hatch.

    2) I remove the floor to reveal the hidden cargo area, I then have a rubber backed heavy duty carpet piece cut to fit the floor of the cargo tray. Works great.

    3) Dog hair is a PITA to get off the upholstry...

I use Scout's Seat Saver from Duluth Trading Company (www.duluthtrading.com). It attaches to the headrests and protects the back of the seat as well as the floor (I don't use the second set of clips). It's easy to remove and shake out the debris that the dogs collect. It comes in khaki, gray and navy.

For containing my dog, I raise the headrests. Granted she's a 60 lb dog and well behaved in the car. It's free to try.

I've got a 55 lb lab/terrier mix. He sits shotgun and wears a padded harness the seat belt goes through. When my Mom's 85 lb lab rides with us, they both sit in the back. She also has a padded harness and is buckled in. They have enough room to move a little, lay down and sleep, but they can't move front to back or change seats. I've got GT covers on the front. My Mom's dog rides with us so infrequently I don't have covers in the back. The fabric cleans up so well I never felt the need for back covers. I'm even thinking of removing the front ones for comfort as I think the original fabric is probably more comfortable than the GT vinyl.

I was considering on the weathertech one since it protects from spills and can contain liquid in the liner but I am not sure if it covers the cargo with the seats down(I assume not)...does it?

for the duluth trading one...does it come off on the side easily?? or there are buckles or something that you can tighten the sides of the seats so even if the dogs are being playful in the back it won't come off on the sdie. And does it have holes for the harness designed with a seat belt buckle to go through?.....

because my dogs are just 1 year old and they are always hyper and very excited when they are going on car rides because they know they are going somewhere fun....thats why its hard for them to be contained or not to move around in the cargo area....

    thanks for the suggestions :p

How about anyone who puts their dog in the kennel ... does your kennel fit in the Prius very easily? My dog will get to 50 lbs, so his kennel is fairly tall. Anyone have any pics or opinions on fitting in dog kennels?

Maybe you could measure the kennel and someone could take a measurement of their Prius for you. I am assuming you don't have a Prius.

This is a link to what we got the dogs for Christmas!
Improved Scout's Seat Saver - Duluth Trading Company

It fits on the headrests of the front seats and the headrests of the back seats. Our three dogs fit in comfortably, including my largest one, a 107 lb. black shephard. I can recommend the products and service at Duluth Trading Co., I've bought several things from them.... Good luck!

Re: For all dog owners who put the dogs in the back!!

Being concerned about dog hair in the cargo area including the sides I searched for a cargo cover that would cover with the rear seats down. I purchased the Duragear Waterproof SUV Van Pet Dog Cargo Liner 57X72 on ebay ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=250116653855 ) .

With the rear seats down and the tonneau cover removed the cover fits almost perfect. It has velcro that attaches to the sides (approx 1" short of the plastic) so the entire cargo area is protectged from the reat hatch to over the top of the rear seats folded down. The cover when in place goes up both sides to protect the entrie area.

The cover is removed easily and folded into the hidden compartment. We have used the cover for a year now and it has worked great keeping the cargo area pet hair free.
    Hope this helps.............

Re: For all dog owners who put the dogs in the back!!

I have a heavy duty liner from my 4Runner. I fold the rear seats down. The liner covers the seats and all the way to the rear hatch. Our two Aussies are secured with a "seat belt" harness to the two rear D-rings. The outside bumper is protected by the "rubber" matt that adheres to the bumper. The interior stays clean. At worst, I just wipe down the liner.

I bought the rubberized floor mats for the entire car (inc extreme rear of car) and when I put the dog back there (she has a dog bed to lie on) I have a leash attach to something back there and then I just hook her up. It's short enough she can't strangle herself over the back seat. Use this system in the Honda Pilot too.
