Toyota iPod integration kit announced

    Press Release: Toyota iPod Integration Kit

    No more earpieces, no more fiddling with the clickwheel as you drive, no more fumbling on the floor to search for your wayward player: Toyota has come up with a perfect integration system that links Apple's iPod directly to your car's audio system. The iPod Integration Kit, available now, provides a simple and discreet connection in the glovebox. Simply plug in the iPod and a direct link is formed between the player and the audio system, letting you select and play tracks using the controls on the audio head unit or (where fitted) the controls on the steering wheel. Functions such as random play, scan, fast-forward, rewind and song or playlist repeat are all made possible.

    On systems with CD text read-out, the playlist and selected track titles are shown, while on all units, the play list, track number and elapsed time are displayed. And there's no risk of the music being cut short by a failing battery, as the adapter will charge up the iPod if the level runs low.

    The unit is simple to install and has been developed with approval from Apple, earning it the Made for iPod certification of quality. Its location in the glovebox also keeps your iPod out of sight from prying eyes.

    The iPod Integration Kit is compatible with all current generation iPod models that have an Apple dock connector. It will also work with many earlier generation versions, although in a few cases some functions may not be accessible. It can be used in any current Toyota or Lexus model, apart from Aygo. It is not currently available for LCVs.

    The cost is £150, including owner's manual and VAT, but not including fitting (approximately one hour).

    Noticed it earlier myself, and the fact they'd announced in the UK.

    I'm curious to know if it can fit older Prius as well....but I guess since I'm installing a VAIS unit tomorrow morning, it is a moot question for me. Ah, well. Such is life :)

    I am just getting ready to buy a MP3 and I thought that you just connected it though the MP3 attachment in the armrest and the JBL system controlled the unit, am I wrong?

    The connector in the armrest is just for audio. There is no way to control an ipod or any other unit with just an audio connection. You have to control the ipod or other mp3 from the device itself unless you have a device like the one described here.

    This is old news - someone posted this a few months ago.

    There isn't a US edition for US made cars. And it's the USA-Spec piece anyway so it's junk.

    Because Toyota of America is alot more 'restrictive' on their use of 3rd party stuff. Toyota of Canada & Europe is a lot more relaxed.

    Hopefully this will make it to the Prius and won't be overly difficult for self-install, I can't see paying the dealer rates to plug in some wires.

    European spec'd ONLY. Toyota of America has NO plans of adding this as a OEM piece.

    Maybe it works well? Not really meant as a slam to the DICE, but let's face it, it's a functional but clumsy interface and the product still seems a bit buggy for most people. Something OEM that perfectly and smoothly integrates is important, a smooth way to scroll through the same menus as the IPOD has would be very welcome by most of us.

    The biggest negative I see here is that you have to unplug the factory CD changer rather than a piggyback plug as apparently Vais and DICE have. Any hope for having both the Ipod and CD units co-existing?
