I originally ordered a set of Toyota OEM all weather mats (front and back seats) for my Prius, and I used them exclusively since February of this year. The mat under the drivers side has developed a hole right in the middle, and the dealership claimed it was from wear and tear -- that it was caused by the heel of my foot resting there as I was driving. Has anyone else had similar experiences with the OEM rubber mats? It seems ridiculous that they'd last less than 7 months, never mind that I only put something like 1000 or 1200 miles on the car a month.

wow, that's crap. we've had the a/w mats for a lot longer than that and they're just fine. IIRC toyota parts carry a 1 year warranty.

I've never worn a hole on one, but mine do tend to develop a pronounced "dent" where my heel rests.
I think I'd push back on this with your dealer. The mat should stand up to normal use, and a hole does not sound like "normal wear and tear" to me, esp not in 8 months of use!

Get yourself a pair of driving shoes. That should solve your problem.

7 months is pretty short and there is a 1 year warranty so you might wanna get that replaced. I have All-Weather mats over my original carpets.

very funny  ... I only have one request: please do a benchmark study and report the results of what MPG you get wearing each of the shoes

    To the OP:
I would pucs back on the dealer that this should not happen from normal use - good luck!

I bought a matching color generic mat set at Wal-Mart, three pieces are on the garage floor to wipe my shoes before entering the house when it rains. The remaining piece, a small rectangle designed for the back floor, was placed on top of the OEM front driver’s mat where the heel rests. It has little spikes to hold it in place on top of the OEM. After over a year the OEM mat still looks new. The small overlay mat is showing wear.

Wow I have had my mats for about 2.5 years and no holes yet. Besides some dirt they are brand new. Is your mat locked down with the hook so it does not shift? Maybe they switched rubber suppliers or the mats are made in China now. :p

I have cheap generic mats in mine. Doing a great job too. Only cost $14AU for the set of 4.

I had the same thing happen to my all-weather mat (hole in the driver's side) after 11,000 miles. My wonderful dealer (Apple Valley Toyota in Martinsburg WV) replaced it for me under warranty.

I went to Walmart and bought a $5 rubber mat (about 1 foot square) and put it over the new mat where my heel aparently sits. Problem solved. :)

My dealer also ended up replacing mine under "one-time warranty". I was thinking of something along the lines of your idea of a rubber guard -- what did you get at Wal-Mart? How do you keep it from slipping around?

On those rubber all-weather mats out of the one year warranty period, would it be possible to cut out the specific area after it has worn through and insert a custom-made, replaceable square of the same or heavier material?

The only problem might be securing the replaceable section in a way to prevent it from shifting.

I'm sure my replacement was a "one-time" thing also. But I wasn't going to let a new mat wear through again...

It was just a single square-ish rubber mat, in the automotive department, and it was the only kind like that Walmart had. Since it's made of rubber almost identical to the Prius mats, it doesn't slide around much. Hope you can find one!
