That floor space in front of the center console would be perfect to put a little console thing or bucket for a garbage can. Back in 1990 when I bought my Toyota pickup, I was able to buy a garbage can, where the base had these 'wing' things with pointy things to lock into the carpet, that sat so perfectly on this center hump.

I've checked around in the Walmart, JCWhitney.com, Harborfreight.com, ebay and a general online search, but I can't seem to find any kind of console or hump mounting thing that would be small enough to fit in that little area behind the dash and in front of the Prius console.

Anyone have any bright ideas, or can point me in the direction of finding what I want? Preferably the garbage can is square, not too tall, can sit stationary on the hump without having to 'hang' anywhere for support or to be prevented for flying about. And I'd love it if it had a few extra cubbies for pens or tissue packs or what not.

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

For a trash can, take a square kleenex box and slice off the top. It fits perfectly in the drawer that comes out of the console. Just to make it look nicer/different you could put contact paper on the inside an outside to make it sturdier or not have a gray cardboard inside and a pretty outside.

I use the tray inside the armrest for my coins/pens. Actually, I have a nylon (Eddie Bauer, I think) trash container with a wired opening that will open and shut, and it loops around the passenger headrest to hang on the back of the seat. It's very easy for me to access, and it's the only place for me to have trash since I keep my kleenex box (with kleenex in it!) inside the center console drawer.

PriuStorm, if you find something like you are describing please share your source. I'd like a place to put my purse that's just a little wider than the center console. I ended up throwing a lot of little stuff into the console like sunscreen and a foldable umbrella. It isn't wide enough to lay in a stack of CDs crosswise, and it's not the right dimensions for me to stash file folders of papers to grade. It's not even tall enough for my short arms to truly rest on it. I'm mildly disappointed but won't lose any sleep over it.

I just use drawer itself for a trashcan. I try not to put anything too mess in there but that's rarely an issue. It's still easy enough to wipe out.

I use a hump fitting trash box and locate it on the hump behind the centre console. It is out of the way and easy enough to reach. I then use the lower drawer to hold a square box of tissues.

Thanks for all the great suggestions... until this moment, I didn't realize there was a drawer there!!! :p

Can you please provide detail where you bought this hump fitting trash box? Is it secured to the hump some way so it doesn't move around? This sounds like what I was thinking of when I wrote, and I like the idea of using the drawer for tissues... however, in a pinch, the empty tissue box in the drawer sounds ideal as well.

    Thanks again.

I cannot remember where I bought it from, it was so long ago. Anyway, I live in Australia but I doubt that it is unique to this country. Try one of those cheap auto parts stores that sell general things for cars.
It consist of a squarish plastic box without a lid. On one side there is a slot for pulling out tissues - thin oblong box type. The box is not attached to the hump. To keep it in place, a length of material with weights sewn into each is attached to the bottom. The weights hang down each side of the car's hump and keep the box stable.
I do not use the tissue section instead I lined the box with a small plastic bag to make it waterproof and easier to dispose of the rubbish.

You can also find stiff covers for those Kleenex boxes. I saw one, probably homemade from that plastic mesh into which yarn is woven. If you can find one, turn it upside down, put something in the bottom, and put it into the secret drawer. Of course, you may end up with upside down flowers or something as the pattern.

I bought a small trash can about 5in x 6in x 8in deep at Pep Boys. I then smoothed the outside edges of the bottom ends ( it had some sharp pimples moulded into it) I took two pieces of velcrow (the hook part) stuck it on the bottom where I had smoothed it out and the velcrow will hook to the carpet and ride on the hump in front of the secret drawer just fine. Works for me and is very handy.

Like TopKick, I bought one of those center hump garbage cans that you mentioned. It's made by Rubber Queen. I got mine from an auto parts store called R&S Strauss, but I think you can get them from almost any auto parts store. Unlike TopKick, I didn't bother filing down the pointy things on the bottom that lock onto the carpet. I didn't see the need. All I did to stabilize the garbage can was to stick a square velcro thingy on at the point of contact --- see below:

    [attachmentid=11190]

It all works, fits and looks fine (near perfect color match to the gray interior plastic). See for yourself:

Nice!! If I had an emoticon for 'thumbup', I'd put it here. :D It does fit there really nicely and matches the interior (I have grey too). I'll look for it!

I've been looking for the same thing. When I had my Corolla I had a small plastic console thing that held two beverages etc which is what I really need since my one holder has my iPod. I, too, have looked in stores, on line, etc, and found nothing acceptable. Somehow my old holder was lost when my Corolla crashed.

Wow. I'm surprised that you guys are having so much trouble finding the center hump litter basket console or cup holder/storage console. Here in NY, it seems like they're all over the place --- in fact I just threw one away the other day. In any event, if you're still having trouble, you can get them online at Amazon or eBay --- but the shipping costs will be around twice the cost of the console. Google "Rubber Queen" (probably the biggest manufacturer of them) and you'll likely find what you're looking for.

    Also, you can:

    1. Try variations of "Rubber Queen" such as "rubberqueen" whenever you google or search.

    2. Go to the Rubber Queen website to see their full catalog:

    http://www.rubberqueen.com/#

    3. Go to the DoItBest.com website page for "Rubber Queen" (their shipping costs are less than those typically on Amazon):

    4. Go to the Amazon page for "rubberqueen":

    http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_ex_n_2/002-...%2Cn%3A15857501

    5. Go to the Amazon page for "litter basket":

    Hi N IL Priusfan,

It just occurred to me that the space between the front of the Prius center console and front plastic dash panel is very tight. It measures only around 8 inches --- too short to fit any of the Rubber Queen center hump cup holder/storage consoles, and probably too short for other brands as well. So I would suggest that you measure the front to back length of any center hump console you are considering to buy to make sure it's 8 inches or less --- unless you plan on putting it on the rear center hump (which measures around 11 inches between the back of the Prius center console and front of the rear seat panel) or on top of one of the car seats.

I believe that it still comes in gray, but they call it charcoal. I saw it last week at my local auto parts store. It is also still available and in stock at amazon.com:
    http://www.amazon.com/dp/product/B0009YDPGI?tag=priuschatcom-20

Note that if you get it, you should secure it to the carpet using Velcro "hook" tape like TopKick did (after I installed mine with Velcro on the side of the basket and the car's plastic center column, the Velcro ended up not sticking permanently onto the plastic center column). But there's no need to file down the pointy parts on the bottom of the basket -- just press the Velcro hook tape down on and in between the points. It'll hold.
