we just reserved our 2008 barcelona red #6, and we should have it by the 20th. yay! i tried my hardest to get my hands on a 2007, but there just weren't any around in my area in the colors i wanted.

so my question is about XM: how much does it cost to have the antenna installed, and is this something that i have to do through the dealer, or can i go to best buy or something?

my brother wants to put me on his family plan so i only have to pay 6.99 a month, but how much is it going to cost me to have XM installed to where it will function through the touch screen? thanks!

Can be done anywhere and there are instructions on this site and elsewhere on the 'net on how to do it yourself in the Prius. A little tedious and anxiety provoking if you've never done something like it before, but not difficult and you're not likely to break anything.

hmm...i will have to hunt down the directions. although i've never attempted something like this, and i do get frustrated very easily.

but i definitely *shouldn't* get it installed at the dealer then, right? thanks!

You can if they offer a decent price or include it in your purchase price, but there's no reason to think it's worth paying any extra to get it done there.

Call Jon August at the following website: http://www.factoryinteractive.com/. He did the sale and install on BOTH my 2006 and 2007 Prius cars here in Northern VA. Since your on the West Coast, you can still purchase the equipment through them, have it shipped to you, and have any shop in your area just do the installation. Jon and his company are absolutely great!!!

I just installed a factory XM kit for my wife. It's not too bad, and the factory directions walk you through it. That is, if the directions come in the box.

I am picking up my first Prius tomorrow afternoon (Magnetic Gray). I had the XM installed at the port and also negotiated (free install), to have it as part of the purchase price.

The e-brochure from the toyota.com web site shows the msrp of XM Radio as $449.00 with installation included.

Also, be sure to get the dealer to activate the 3 month free trial subscription. Then, when it expires, you can join the family plan.

I already have XM in my home so I only needed to buy a Delphi FM modulator and magnetic base antenna.

Here are the pictures of the installed antenna. I get maximum reception as compared with installing on dashboard.

Of course you have to essentially pull the dash apart just to gain access to the antenna leads and power lead, and give up one FM preset. If you don't use a preset, you can just scan/search to the only signal you will receive, the XM signal. This may be a hassle if you keep switching between radio and XM.

I won the FM modulator for .99 plus shipping on eBay. Antenna came with the XM radio car kit.

I don't have to pay for additional xm subscription charges, dealer installation or any other inflated charges for parts I don't need.

I just installed (literally just finished the test drive) the XM in my '07 Prius. I ordered the factory kit from Coastal Tech, overall it was pretty quick install. The most challenging part was getting my large hand in the tight spaces to make the connection on the back of the radio.

I had ordered it to be installed when I bought the car at Sunnyvale Toyota, but they didn't install it before I had it delivered to Oregon. I got around to doing it 2-days shy of a year since buying the car.

Sunnyvale Toyota can do it, or you could give it a go yourself...but if you are afraid of popping the dash apart, you may wish to seek assistance from a friend. The instructions are pretty good, you only need a 10mm socket and a screw driver.
