So I'm now in day ten of my three week vacation in Taipei, Hong Kong and Shanghai and it's been great except for the fact that i'm suffering from Prius withdrawal. Not having a car to drive is really disconcerting after we all get so used to driving wherever we go. I tell people i meet that i commute 30 miles, roughly 50 kilometers a day to school/work and they have a look of disbelief on their faces as they cannot imagine commuting that far.
Anyways, I spotted a 07 touring edition in Taipei on Shin Sheng Road they other day while in a cab and had the urge to wave. While Prii maybe all over the place in the States, they're quite rare to see on the roads in Asia. There was also one in HK as well parked along the street i was walkng on. It's so trippy to see the driver side on the right.

Anyways, i'm torn because i'd love to have my prius here with me but on the other hand, cannot imagine myself taking my prius out on the streets here is shanghai as the traffic and drivers here are insane. a three lane highway morphs in to a four lane highway in rush hour and the taxi drivers are racing in and out of cars, bikes, mopeds, and pedestrians, honking at anything and everything that's in their way while never hitting the brakes.
I would've taken some pictures of the prii sightings but i didn't have my camera on me.

And I'm sure your Prius misses you - especially if you have SKS & forgot to disable it while you were gone. If that's the case, you may have a display of displeasure (otherwise known as dead battery) when you get home.

I thought the SKS will shut down after 14 days and you just have to reactivate it again......no?

It doesn't "shut down". It just stops scanning for the fob.

    Welcome to Shanghai!
I know everyone who visted China or Shanghai will suprize about traffice situations.
It's not difficult drive in than you think. Utill I got to drive in Shanghai I did not know how traffic flow works.
Moped and bicycle are like a bullet they don't care about traffic rule and they make its own rules. So car driver has to avoid to hit the those crazy bikers. Then pedestrian has to avoid run over by car, bicycle, and mopeds.

In Shanghai car or mopeds can not honk the horn because part of noise pollution reduction law. If cought by pollice it will fine 200RMB for car driver and I think 50RMB for mopeds.

Have you see Prius in Shanghai yet?? You will spot one easliy around Nanjin Xi Lu, Portman and that area.

OK - how long can you safely leave it without the SKS running the battery down?? I've got a week-long business trip coming up and don't want to come back to a dead battery.

Also, I usually valet park but am a little leery about leaving this car in the hands of someone who may not have a clue - any comments?

When I accidentally left the hatch ajar & the battery ran down, I called AAA & told them I had a Prius. The guy who came knew just what to do (I also asked him specifically if he had worked on a Prius before he started and he knew where the post was under the hood was without prompting) & I was on my way in minutes. Now I always use the black button to lock up so Fiona will let me know if a door is not shut tight.

i have not seen any prii in shanghai yet, i live in the chang ning dist. near hong xu road.

Anyways, does anyone know if toyota roadside assistance come to jumpstart your car? Do they charge anything? I'm just speculating now because i won't be home for another 12 days and want to know what to do should my car not start. I don't have AAA.

I was in Shanghai last week, in the Pudong (Century Park) area, but didn't see any Prii, although I do have to admit that most of my day was inside an office, so not much chance to see anything.

However, flew to Hong Kong for a day and the first car I saw on arrival was a bright yellow Prius. It was actually painted up as an airport vehicle with the Hong Kong airport safety yellow, and was parked just under the airbridge next to where my plane pulled in. Saw several more around Causeway Bay.

So, in the end, I have now had three days, in three different continents - Friday in Asia (Hong Kong), Saturday at home in Sydney, and Sunday in USA, and the only place where it was hard to find any Prii was at home. Only saw one other even though my family had me driving nearly all day. :(
