Just had my first oil change and the guy said to schedule an appointment with service because my differential is leaking. He said, I quote: "I know it's new, but some of them come with a leaking differential. Sorry."

Needless to say, the guy next to me who was talking to me about my Prius and considering buying one, suddenly lost interest when he heard that...

Anyway that happened to anyone else? 5 thousand miles only :-(

Even the odd Toyota will have something that needs to be fixed. Mine has been trouble free. Nothing to be worried about. Just keep snickering at the cars that -always- leak a little diff. fluid. BTW, the Prius is on or near the top of the list of no-problem new cars.

    Hi PriusOwner004,

But the Prius, like all front wheel cars, does not have a differential case. If anything is leaking its the engine or the transmission. Because the gears that are normally in a differential case (at the rear of the a rear wheel drive car) are inside the transmission case.

Drive it home, get a clean peice of carboard, put it under the car, and check the carboard in a week. Do not let any other car park over the cardboard.

This sounds like a hoax to hook you on expensive unneccassary maintanence. If nothing is evident on the cardboard, take your car somewhere else for maintanence.

By pointing out the leak in a part the car does not have, I think he was testing to see if you were gullible.

Yes, but they are famous for fuel leaking, not differential or non-explosive component.

there technically is a differential case, but it's housed within the transaxle unit. there are a few oil seals in the trans unit, and if installed improperly they can leak.

just because there is a leak does not mean it is serious enough to drip under the car though, seepage also occurs and can indicate a very minor leak. at any rate, the car is under warranty at 5k and will be covered as such for the repair.

that's why they provide that warranty in the first place. don't worry about it too much. and be glad they pointed it out to you in the first place. some dealerships won't even tell you, if it will add to their warranty repair numbers...

My 2004 had the steering assembly replaced at 46,000 miles. The ABS failed slightly earlier. The MFD has been working erratically for over 20,000 miles. The car has 68,000 miles... I don't think I'll reach 80,000 with it.

I would do the cardboard too. I would also jack the car up, use jack stands, and look under the car yourself and see what you see. The car is under warranty so if it in fact is leaking, take it back to Toyota, get a loaner, and then come back and get your fixed 2007. No worries; all cars have their little problems.

Service says a few new ones came that way. Wondering if it has happened to anyone else.

Where's it leaking from? The drain plug? The joining seam? The
axle seals toward the back? It's pink fluid, right? Pictures??

Like another member here said, it's under warranty, so I am not paying anything.

It's possible it's something else leaking. I don't blame the guy. He just does oil changes for the dealership and was kind enough to point out that there is a leak. He said it MIGHT be the differential and that I should have service check it out. So I'll find out tomorrow. Let's hope it's not a big problem.

And I'm sorry about that guy above who's experienced so many problems with his Prius. There are bad apples everywhere, but I certainly hope my car isn't one of them! I've never had luck with cars. Every car that I've had from my first car $600 to my last one (before the Prius) $110K - all have had issues and all have leaked. My luck, I guess.

Hmm, I've never heard of fuel leakage in Lambos, but they ARE notorious for oil leaking. Same with Corvettes. My neighbor doesn't park his 05 Vette in his drive way or his garage because he doesn't want it all messed up from the oil... LOL

Hold on to that. I am not 100% sure it's the differential. Oil guy said it MIGHT be the differential. Going to service tomorrow and I'll post details. Thanks.

    I third the cardboard thing.

And at least if something is wrong it is covered under warranty.

No problems with mine. Purchased April 2005.

No matter what they say, I'd get a second opinion from a different dealer. Who knows how much they really know about the Prius. That "a few new ones come that way" sounds fishy to me.
