I have no idea how you can see the back from that angle. Where can see find more spy shots?

Read some of the comments on that page. Man, some people really hate the Prius, or "Pious" as some are calling it. I never knew I was a sanctimonious tree hugger before.

Odd that it has Michigan plates. The fact that there is also a Civic hybrid in the photos says that maybe it is another manufacturer doing comaprison tests, or as somebody said, a test mule.

Hate to break it to everyone (especially Jalopnik or whoever paid these "spy" photographers), but this is just an 04-08 Prius out on the road. Toyota is still slated for the Prius re-design in Spring of 2009, and this, my friends, is not it.

The article refers to the "corporate grille" - but look at that thing. Does that grill look anywhere close to the same as the Yaris or Camry grill? Come on, Toyota's not going to go half-nice person on making the grill look like the rest of their product line. Hello, Jalopnik, you can SEE the tape covering the headlights and grill!!! Also, look at the color of the car next to it. That's a Salsa Red Prius, not even one of the currently available colors!

You can put these rumors/photos to bed, folks. The 2009 Prius will be one of the most closely guarded model releases ever. I can assure you that some spy photographs have not shown up 18 months before it's release.

Guys, they have a Michigan M plate. Not easy to get. You have to be a vehicle manufacturer licensed as such in Michigan. I used to live in Michigan. When you see an M plate driving around, you get out the camera.

I spotted an M plate on Ford Taurus here in Colorado a few years back. Closer inspection revealed it be a test car of some sort (How many gauges can you tape a to a windshield and dashboard?)

My guess is it's a modified powertrain car. I don't understand why it is masked. Where is the rear spoiler, anyway?

As I don't have my Prius yet (arrives at my dealer in one week) I cannot compare to my own, but I noticed something on the picture from the rear of the car. Is that the standard exhaust pipe? It seems to be rather big for a 1.5 liter engine.

And is that a sharkfin antenna?

you're right.. the exhaust is different from the normal one. This has more of a straight pipe out back, something I don't like as "hiding" the exhaust make it look more electric.

I don't think this car has a lot to do with the new model. No manufacturer would change this little in a car several years old. So it migth be a mule to test batteries (but then why "hide it" at all?) or the new model is delayed

The tape is explained here: http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/2007-0...utos-test_N.htm

This suggests that the photos are genuine and the tape is part of the cat-and-mouse game between manufacturers and the carparazzi.

I do not know it still looks the same except for the white tape:
