I always take the opened things.
For soap, when I open them I'm careful to not rip the package. At the end of my stay I put the bar back into the wrapping.

Like A Priori, I used to travel tons and wasn't home enough to use all the soap and shampoo I brought home. But when that stopped, I didn't buy soap for months!

That's a great idea. Do you also serve a hot breakfast in the morning, or is it just continental?

    I take everything.

The little shampoos and conditioners I took to Guatemala with me last December.

The little soaps I use at school. Our Library Service students are required to wash their hands at the beginning and end of class. They appreciate the hotel soap over the school stuff.

I take all the shampoo, soap, lotion, conditioner, and coffee every day and stash it in my kit because, as the Bangels said, "then they bring you more". I give the conditioner to a coworker. The coffee goes to a heavy coffee drinker or the office.

I take everything but the soap, because I don't use soap at home. I have a travel bag where I have all the toiletries, contact lens solution etc and the hotel shampoos etc. are great to stock up in that bag, especially when I stay at famly/friend's places while travelling.

Wasn't there something in the news last week about Chinese soap used in hotels had something weird in it and that it should be thrown away?

Anyhoo. I never take the stuff but I did have to stay in a hotel for 4 months one time (for some Army course) and I would move the soap off the tub ledge so I could shower and two (hand and face soaps) off the sink ledge. I would put it on the bathroom shelf in front of the mirror. Everyday the maid would add three more even though the stack of soaps were in plain sight.

At 3 a day the shelf started getting full so I started tossing them in the medicine cabinet, then under the sink. lol I should have taken a picture of them and counted them when I left. I wonder if she kept them or put them back into the hotel inventory.

My first job out of college I started collecting the different kinds as I stayed in different motels. Now they just fill up a drawer in the downstairs bathroom, to be set out when we have guests.

I bet you've never seen a soap collection before. :)

I will not use most soaps.
Not only the animal products/testing/cruelty issues, but I will not use anything that has Sodium Lareyl/Lareth Sulfates, or any coal tar derivatives, or other petrochemicals.

I travel with my own little bottle of Dr. Bronner's liquid soap, which I can use as a shampoo, as well.

I used to manage a resort hotel. Please leave the towels, the sheets, and the pillows, okay? Thanks :)

    Yes. (about bar soap)
drbronners.com or your local health food store. Heck, at least one of our 'normal' supermarkets carries Dr. Bronner products.

The hotel soaps are fine for school, but at home I use handmade natural soaps.

I bought some great ones from Kate's Soaps. She is nice enough to cut the large bars into the travel size for me. I find the travel size fits in my hands much better. Her samplers are all travel size as well and I highly recommend them. A nice variety.

The orange-clove and rose-geranium are wonderful. She also has a great natural DOG SOAP. I started using this because of my dissatisfaction with all of the dog shampoos on the market. They're expensive and I don't like them. The dog isn't thrilled either. While he's still not a bath lover, he seems to tolerate the new soap better than the old shampoos. I have trouble choosing from all of the varieties so I'll often order the travel bar sampler since that is the size I prefer anyway.
