I have 40, yes I said 40 sets of traffic lights to contend with on my 35km commute each way, yes 80 sets of lights a day, minimum. I'll struggle to get much lower than 4.2 - 4.3 but struggle I will.

Depending on the route I choose I can get as little as 4 stop lights and 1 stop sign on my 70km commute to work and 3 stop lights and 1 stop sign on my 70km commute home. Of course that doesn't help my L/100km much since it requires me to drive on the interstate expressway. I can do a lot better by taking a non-expressway route that entails a few dozen stop lights and nearly as many stop signs with a slower posted speed limit and timing my approach (glide, coast, or otherwise reduce speed) to reduce the use of the brake.

Generally I choose the expressway route.

What is the formula for converting L/100KM to MPG?

Are these screens the reverse of the MPG consumption screens? -- ie, for MPG, the higher the bar, the better. But for L/100KM, the lower the bar, the better? I'm having a hard time getting my mind reoriented!

    Yep.

With MPG you are looking at distance divided by volume, with L/100km you are looking at volume divided by distance.

You want to go as many miles as possible on each 1 gallon of fuel.
You want to use as few liters of fuel as possible to travel each 100km of distance.

Hmm, not sure if you just wnat to know how to jump from one number to the other or if you want to understand why/how the calculations are done. Here's both answers:

Ok, so, to convert MPG to L/100km. . . .

There are 1.60934 km per mile so:
Multiply by 1.60934 to get km/gal

Then there are 0.26425 gallons per liter so:
Multiply by 0.26425 to get km/L

Then divide 1 by the result to get the inverse L/km

Then multiply by 100 to get L/100km

    58mpg * 1.60943 km/mile = 93.34172 km/gal
    (93.34172 km/gal) * (0.26425 gal/L)= 24.66555 km/L
    1 / (24.66555 km/L) = 0.040542 L/km
    (0.040542 L/km) * 100 = 4.0542 L/100km

    58mpg ~ 4.05 L/100km

If you want to simplify it all and not calculate each step individually,
you can just divide 235.14 by MPG to get L/100km and divide 235.14 by L/100km to get MPG.

The 235.14 is just the result of multiplying the 1.609 and 0.264 and dividing 100 by the result.

Awesome job Tideland! I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to achieve those numbers, but if so, my 110km round trip commute might cost me less than it does now. Keep these great photos come. They continue to tide me over while I wait for mah behbeh to arrive.

wow  But even then you get 4.2L/100km.. not bad... I know Australians can easily get into the 4s.

    235.21/mpg = L/100km or 235.21/(L/100km) = mpg (US).

    3.9L/100km is 60mpg.

2.5L/100km on the screen is 94mpg. 5.0L/100km on the screen is 47mpg.

Yes, the lower the bar the better.

    Thanks.

Well, it took me 3 years to get it. THREE!! So be patient, very patient. Every summer, I just worked at getting it lower and lower. Last summer, it was 4.2 (usually 4.6), 2005 was 4.4 (usually 4.5-4.6)

If there's one thing I have, it's limitless patience. You have to have it when working with a Minister's office. ;-) Well, I'll be doing tons of reading, but really, anything under 10L/100km (average) will be a blessing versus what I'm getting now. ;-)

That being said, congrats again! You've got awesome skillz.

10L/100km? lol.. I get that in our old 2002 Camry (now totalled).

If you drive normally, you'll be in the 5-6L/100km range. In the winter, it'll go up to 6-7L/100km (since you guys get colder than we do. I go up to 5 during winter but Jay in Winnipeg goes up to 8, 9 or even 10L/100km in -40°C weather).

Hmm, that's odd. When I did the math I cam up with 235.14. You state 235.21. Not a very big difference (only 0.07) but still I wonder where I made my mistake (if I did)?

    Using my 235.14 I get:

    3.9L/100km is 60.3mpg
    2.5L/100km is 94.1mpg

Like I said, not a very big difference.
